YDNA Matches

Galtrigal Branch - the Deduced Ancestral Haplotype of two cousins is a 67-1 match to the Deduced Ancestral Haplotype of our family. Descended from Donald the Faithful Pilot who is credited with helping Bonnie Prince Charlie and Flora MacDonald flee after Culloden, the family occupations are Milling and Fine Carpentry as they are in our own family. Galtrigal is located across the loch from Dunvegan Castle. 95% of the time a Common Ancestor will be found between this Branch and our Family in a generation born about 1700.

Colbost - Norman MacLeod, heriditary Galley Maker (Fine Carpentry) to Dunvegan, born about 1700 in Colbost located near Dunvegan. His descendant is a 67-2 from our family haplotype and a 67 - 1 to the Galtrigal Branch. 95% of the time a Common Ancestor will be found between this Branch and our Family in a generation born about 1700. The descendant tested was born in Scotland.

Norman MacLeod - born before 1775 in Scotland; immigrated to Virginia then to Gallia County Ohio - descendants of this man match our Deduced Ancestral Haplotype on markers 1 - 25 perfectly which is unusual in any one other than close relations; however one of the two descendants tested upgraded to the 67 marker level where his results showed 2 mutations in markers 26 - 37 and 2 mutations in markers 38 - 67. 95% of the time a Common Ancestor will be found between this Branch and our family in a generation born between 1530 AD and 1700 AD. One of his mutations are either unique to his paternal line within the larger related group and another is shared with Colbost above; another mutation is on a volatile marker known to mutate in very recent generations. The testing of other cousins and the upgrading of the cousin who tested only 25 markers could tell us more about this match.

Family

Jesse Lazarus McLeod was the fifth child of Alexander and Harriet Yates McLeod. He was born on the Horsepen Branch located in Kershaw District, South Carolina. Horsepen is a tributary of the Beaverdam Branch which itself is a tributory of the Scape Or river. Today this property is located in Lee County. Family Bible of Alexander and Harriet Yates McLeod, formerly owned by J. Frank McLeod, deceased; present location unknown; copy of birth, marriage and death page on file at the Sumter County South Carolina Genealogical Society. Copies provided to Lori McLeod Wilke by her father, Donald Ross McLeod Jr. and Col. Purdy Belvin McLeod Jr.

His paternal grandparents were Alexander and Sarah McIntosh MacLeod/McLeod. Alexander (I) immigrated as a child from Scotland with his parents in about the year 1783. After an approximate stay in Richmond County North Carolina of 20 years, Alexander and Sarah migrated into Kershaw District where they purchased 225 acres on the Horsepen Branch from Micajah Woodward. Deeds and Conveyances, Kershaw District, South Carolina; page 116 Book G accessed and copied by Lori McLeod Wilke and David Jay Wilke

Jesse's paternal great grandparents were Angus and Nancy McCutchen MacLeod/McLeod who lived on McLeods Mill Pond in Sumter District (present day Lee County); land they had purchased from Jesse Peebles, Edward Reynolds and Hugh McCall. Today this property can be seen on Lee County South Carolina Maps still designated as "McLeod Pond". In fact, this property is held by McLeod descendants today.

Nothing is known of his grandmother's family (McIntosh) nor of his great grandmother's (McCutchen). There were McIntosh and McCutchen's in the Sumter and Kershaw District/County area of South Carolina and it could be that these were relatives of Sarah and Nancy but nothing to date has been found to indicate this family connection.

Childhood: 1847 - 1860

Jesse was born on February 20, 1847 and his name was entered into the Family Bible. Jesse grew up surrounded by extended family members although both his paternal grandparents were deceased by the time of his birth (Alex I in 1824/Sarah bet. 1831-1840). photo provided to Lori McLeod WIlke by Donald Ross McLeod Jr. October 2000

Records indicate that in these early years, the various branches of the family remained close; his great uncle Daniel McLeod and his wife Catherine McLean, still lived and operated McLeods Mill and the general stores on their property and all of the siblings of his father, Alexander II, remained near neighbors as can be seen by their census records. The legal records of the various branches show that they represented each other in both business and personal events such as the marriage and death of family members.

The family attended Antioch Baptist Church throughout Jesse's childhood; the church records show that the families of all of his aunts and uncles attended there as well. This church attendance would have resulted in socializing with Davis', Arrants', Moseleys', Meyers' among other families that frequently appear in our family records.

Although records indicate that his father, Alexander II, may have operated a mill on the family property, this has yet to be confirmed. In any event, it is likely that Jesse spent time at the Mill operated by his great uncle Daniel McLeod until Daniel's death in 1852 and operated by his cousin, John Robert McLeod and that this time was also a time of great socializing with family. Trips to the mill would have included the entire family as shopping in the general store for those items not grown personally was usually done at the same time. Due to the time involved in traveling, picnics and swimming occupied the children as the adults caught up with neighbors.

1860 - 1870 The War Between the States

In the 1860 Census, Jesse Lazarus McLeod was shown as aged 13; over the next few years, life as he knew it was to change drastically. In September of 1861, the call to form what would be known as the "The 15th South Carolina Volunteer Infantry" was heard. The 15th was the last of the regiments called to fulfill a quota of 3000 men set down by the Confederate States of America for the state of South Carolina. The new quota was established after the battle of First Manassas. Some of the men who formed the 15th had previously served with the now disbanded 1st South Carolina Volunteer Infrantry for the first six months of the war. After the enlistment period, the men mustered at Lightwood Knot Springs in Columbia South Carolina. Jesse's eldest brother, Norman A. McLeod, aged 22, was one of those men who joined the 15th (It is unknown to date whether he previously served). Obituary of brother Norman A. McLeod in the CAMDEN CONFEDERATE MAY 15, 1863, copy provided to Lori McLeod Wilke by Donald Ross McLeod Jr. in January of 2000

His first cousins, Thomas and John, both sons of John N and Kitsy Davis McLeod, signed up with Co. C. 6th Regiment South Carolina Infantry; cousin Alexander Moseley, son of Catherine McLeod and John C. Moseley, was a Captain with the 20th SC Infantry and his cousin William McLeod, son of Angus and Eliza Arrants McLeod, served in Co. G. of the 20th. His uncle, Angus McLeod II , a Corporal in Co. D. of the 5th Batallion Reserve Corp, also served along with another uncle Alfred Davis, wife of his aunt Jane. Several of the young men who had married his female cousins also served the Confederacy. Col. Stephen Madison Boykin, the husband of his first cousin once removed, Annie McLeod, daughter of Daniel and Catherine McLean McLeod, also served.

"No official record of Confederate Service can be found regarding Jesse. However, he is listed in the Sumter County War Veterans documentation as a Civil War Veteran. This entry was made based on his membership in "The Dick Anderson Chapter of Confederate Veterans." Local Historians say that Jesse would not have been accepted for membership in the Chapter had there been no proof of his service in the Confederate Forces." Paragraph taken from the work of Donald Ross McLeod Jr. provided to Lori McLeod Wilke October 2000.

According to his 1922 obituary, Jesse served for two years of the war; it can be assumed that at age 13 in 1860, he most likely served from 1863 - 1865 (aged 16-18). With no official record having been found, personal testimony of those with whom he served may have been used to establish his membership in the Dick Anderson Chapter. It is possible that he served unofficially, joining up with a regiment and fighting along side its enlisted members. Note of Donald Ross McLeod Jr., provided to Lori McLeod Wike October 2001/Confirmed by records of the Dick Anderson Chapter in the Sumter Archives June 2004 by Lori McLeod Wilke and David Jay Wilke/ Obituary of Jesse L. McLeod Special to the State Sumter, March 14

Many of Jesse's family members perished during the war:

April 13th 1862, while still stationed at James Island, his cousin Sgt. William McLeod, the only son of Angus and Eliza, would die from Typhoid Fever in the Charleston Hospital. His body would be carried home to Kershaw and buried at Antioch Baptist Church where his stone includes a description of his service to the Confederacy.

July 14, 1862, his uncle, John N. McLeod was crushed between two railway cars while in Richmond Virginia visiting his two sons who were serving the Confederacy; Thomas A. in the CSA Co. C. 6th SC Infantry and John Alfred in the CSA Co. G. 6th SC Infantry. John's body was carried home to South Caroina by his best friend, Harmon Arrants, and he was buried in Antioch Baptist Cemetery near his nephew William McLeod. !

1862 - Jesse W. Wilson, the husband of his first cousin, Zina McLeod, daughter of John N., died serving in an unknown regiment.

January 18 1863 - Brother Norman A. McLeod, passed away from pnuemonia and was buried in Richmond. Sometime between this date and April 14th, his father Alexander, traveled to Richmond to claim his body and bring him home to be buried in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery in the McLeod Family Plot on April 16th.

May 12, 1863 John Holland, husband of his first cousin, Nicey Jane McLeod, died in the Ladies Hospital of Columbia South Carolina; John served with the DeSaussure Light Artillery under Captain DePasse. John was buried in the Holland Family Plot at Marshall United Methodist Church

January 24 1864, his brother, John B McLeod who was about 16 years old at his death. John is buried in the McLeod Family Plot at Antioch Baptist Church. It is unknown to date whether John also died serving the confederacy; it does not appear likely if one looks at his tombstone...brother Norman A. McLeod was buried with a stone stating his service to the Confederacy; his gravestone lies beside his cousin William and his uncle Angus II, both of their stones also showing their service. But, it is unknown when the confederate stones were placed.

June 21 1864, his uncle, Angus McLeod II, youngest son of Alexander and Sarah McIntosh McLeod, died in Hardeville, South Carolina, Confederate States of America leaving Eliza Ann Arrants, a childless widow. Angus was buried next to his son William at Antioch Baptist.

Giving evidence of the hardship that was felt after the war ended, are the estate files of family members. John N. and Angus II had operated a business known as the J.N. & A. McLeod Firm; evidence exists of another firm that may have been connected to our family, the McLeod & Clarkson Company. It is known beyond doubt that the first Firm was bankrupt by 1867 even though it had continued to be operated by Rev. J.E. Rodgers, executor of the Angus McLeod Estate and John S. Bradley, the executor of John N. McLeod's estate. What became of the second business is not yet known, but the loss of the first company resulted in the destitution of Eliza Arrants McLeod, Angus' widow and Kitsy Davis McLeod is shown selling a great deal of the estate of John N. to cover her own debts. Kitsy, with the help of close family friend, Edwin Barnes had attempted to save John's estate earlier by purchasing 900 acres of it (not including Kitsy's dower lands, which were hers until her death).

The after affects of the war on Jesse's parents, Alexander and Harriet Yates McLeod, are still being researched. What is known is that for more than five years, Alexander spent much time in the courts of Sumter and Kershaw County testifying, appraising and bonding the administration of the estates of his family members and close friends. Lending evidence that this constant facing of deaths aftermass took a great toll on Alexander is that the estate of his eldest son, Norman A. McLeod, who had perished in 1863 was not probated until 1868; Alexander nor Jesse administered the estate as would have been the normal procedure. The estate was executed by a son in law, Willis Gaylord, the husband of Sarah, who was a deputy of the Sheriff of Kershaw County. Could it be because by this time, Alexander could simply not face the court again, this time dealing with the death of his eldest son?

Making it obvious that the war devastated the remaining McLeod's financially, is that from this point on we see many of the them renting instead of owning their land. Although still possessed of a great many acres, the funds to plant crops were simply not there for many years to come; property was continually sold in order to merely pay the taxes. During the next years, we see the family members moving further and further away from the original plantations owned by the first and second generations of our McLeods.

1870 - 1880 Marriage to Maggie Josey

Despite numerous searches of the index and individual pages of the Census Images online at Ancestry.com, I have been unable to locate Jesse's enumeration in the 1870 Census, nor have I found his parents and many other relatives. It would appear that pages listing the area where they lived was not included in the indexing or scanning of images.

On December 13, 1870 at Antioch Baptist Church In Kershaw County, South Carolina USA - Jesse was married to Nancy Margaret Josey by the Rev. James E. Rodgers. Marriage List of Rev. James E. Rogers; Marriage Record M 243 and J 200 / Marriage Record of Antioch Baptist Church originally in the possession of Mrs. D.M. Davis (Record of Antioch Baptist Church, found June 30 2003, Meyers Family File, Camden Archives by Lori McLeod Wilke and David J. Wilke photo provided to Lori McLeod Wilke by Col. Purdy Belvin McLeod Jr. June 2000

The exact date of Maggie's birth is unknown, but she was born about the year 1850. Maggie was the daughter of William Robert II Josey and Elizabeth Turner. The Josey family, orignally Jossey, imigrated from Putnam, Surrey, London County, England sometime in the 1600's into Nasomond County, Virginia. Maggie's gr grandfather, William R. Josey I migrated to Sumter District between 1802 and 1804.

Jesse and Maggie were actually 2nd cousins once removed. Jesse's mother, Harriet Yates McLeod, was the daughter of Martha Josey and Willis Yates. Martha Josey was the sister of Maggie's grandfather; their common ancestor was Robert Josey.

The Jossey/Josey Family is well documented, having several revolutionary war veterans among its members. They arrived in Nasomond County Virginia from St. Giles, London, England before 1660 when Maggie's forefather, Col. James Jossey, was born there. Four generations later, William Jossey II left Virginia for North Carolina where Maggie's grandfather, Robert Josey was born on September 29, 1781. Robert migrated to the Sumter/Kershaw area of South Carolina where Maggie's father, William, was born about 1805. The House of Jossey/Josey, provided to Lori McLeod Wilke by Col. Purdy Belvin McLeod Jr. June 2003 at the McLeod Family Reunion, Lugoff, Kershaw, South Carolina

Marrying so late in the year, it is likely that the 1870 Census would show Jesse still living with his parents as would have Maggie...the 1880 Census shows them living two households from his parents. Therefore, it can be assumed that during this decade, the couple remained on family property.
Maggie and Jesse attended Antioch Baptist Church until at least 1877 according to partial records of the church found in the Myers Family File at the Camden Archives in June of 2003.

During this decade, Jesse's mother is found selling hundreds of acres of the family land including some which had been owned by Jesse's uncle John N. McLeod and cousin John Robert McLeod as well as another uncle, Angus McLeod II. It is obvious that some financial hardship must have existed to explain the rapid liquidation of the family land.

The question of why it was Jesse's mother, Harriet, who was selling the property is of great interest.....in an age where women owned nothing but the dower lands of a deceased husband, Harriet, whose husband still lived, was selling and mortgaging property for more then ten years prior to Alexander's death (1895). Research to date indicates that it may have been that Alexander never swore the Oath of Loyalty after the war; it appears he would have been required to do this in order to regain his citizenship in the re-united states. Perhaps those who refused to swear were denied the right to sell property.

By the 1900 Census, Jesse is found renting and operating Whiltes Mill Pond in Central Sumter County. The Mill was formerly known as DesChamps/DeChamps Mill. It is not known whether Maggie ever lived there with him or if this move took place after the death of his father in 1896, but the continued sale of land into the 1890's by Harriet would indicate that the family's financial situation led to Jesse becoming a rentor and not an owner of land.

He was a young man who made many friends; all who knew him loved him. Just a year ago he connected himself with the Methodist Church and lived a consistent member until his death. Death of Maggie Josey McLeod

On September 27, 1894 in Sumter County South Carolina, Maggie Josey McLeod passed away from complications suffered giving birth to twin boys, Jesse Purdy Belvin (McLeod) and Hugh Hampton McLeod. The twins were immediately fostered; Purdy to the Belvin family and Hugh to Maggie's sister, Abigale Josey Evans, the wife of Hugh H. Evans.

Maggie is buried at Bethany Baptist Church. She shares a toombstone with her son, Josie (aka Jesse) McLeod who died at age 19, two years after her death. Joe asked to be buried with his mother shortly before he passed away of illness.

Hugh, known as Hammie, died around the age of 8 from some unknown illness, but before his death, several photographs had been taken of the boys together. Margaret Lucille was raised by her elder sister, Mattie McLeod after Mattie's marriage to Samuel Foxworth. Hugh is buried with his foster parents.

Marriage to Mary Rosa Ives

On December 26, 1894, the widowed Jesse married 24 year old Mary Rosa Ives, who was at that time a member of Tirzah Presbyterian Church (Dalzell, Sumter County). A record of that church shows that she was dismissed at "Baker School House - because she "married Jesse McLeod").

Mary Rosa Ives, known as Rosa, and her twin Catherine Ives (Brown) were born May 18, 1870 to Joseph Freeman Ives and Sarah Ann Ross. Joseph was the son of William Ives and Julia Ann Freeman (d/o Jose Freeman). The Ives Family appear to have come into Sumter District South Carolina around 1810 from Edgecomb County North Carolina along with the Matthew Ross family (Sarah Ann Ross' father - Matthew Ross was married to a Sarah Ives, reputed to have been a cousin, or possibly even the sister of Joseph's father, William Ives.) They resided in the Rafting Creek area of Sumter on property near what is now known as Ross Farm Road and Bracey Creek Road/Bridge.

Two of Jesse's children with Maggie Josey married in 1896, Josey aka Jesse (to Ella Winkles Ardis) and Mattie Elizabeth (to Samuel Foxworth). Rosa would help with the raising of the children remaining in the home - Angus Robert - aged 16 who remained at home until 1904 when he married Elizabeth Eva "Betty" Ives, a first cousin of Rosa's; John Albert - aged 13 who remained at home until 1916 when he married Edna Ross, a cousin of Rosa's ; Kate aged 10 who would remain at home until 1915 at which time she married William Thomas McLeod, the grandson of Daniel McLeod and Catherine McLean; James Ervin aged 7 who would remain at home until 1907 when he married Della Ives, also a cousin of Rosa; and Thomas Edward who was 6 at his mother's death. Jesse and Maggie's eldest son, William Norman McLeod married in 1900 but helped Jesse to run White's Mill for many years, so it assumed that he lived near on even on the property.

Jesse and Mary Rosa Ives had only one child, my grandfather, Donald Ross McLeod Sr., born February 12 1896. Rosa and Donald were not well after the birth and Joseph and Sarah Ives "carried them home" to care for them. Although the exact date of it occurrance is unknown, at some point, Jesse traveled to their Rafting Creek home to bring them back to his home. Joseph Freeman Ives allowed his daughter to return to Whites Mill but not his grandson.
