The
Interview
with
Albert
John
McLeod
cr.
1920
"How
are
our
Boykin
cousins?"
"Alexander,
with
his
family,
left
Scotland
and
traveled
to
Ireland
for
a
time.
They
sailed
from
Ireland
to
Virginia
and
a

Norman,
was
born
on

ship.
They
eventually
migrated
to
Robeson,
North
Carolina
where
another
brother
named
Daniel
was
born.
Alexander
with
his
wife,
a
McIntosh,
left
for
Old
Camden
District
in
South
Carolina.
Alexander
had
two
grants
of
land
on

He
had
cousins
who
were

Daniel's
descendants
remain
in
the

today"

I
first

aware
of
this

when
I

During
that

The

Betsy
McLeod
Betsy
was
the
daughter
of
Angus
and
Nancy
McCutchen
McLeod,
born
after
their
immigration
from
Scotland
to
the
United
States.
Although
the
exact
year
of
her
birth
is
unknown,
census
records
have
shown
that
she
was
born
between
1795
and
1800
in
North
Carolina.
Migration
from
North
Carolina
into
South
Carolina
took
place
sometime
between
the
1810
and
1820
census
takings
-
the
family
was
in
Richmond
County
NC
in
1810
and
found
in
Sumter

SC
in
1820.

cr.

in

according
to
his

It
is

but
they
arrived

after
the

taking
of

Their
first

purchase
appears
to
have
been
in

1828/1829 Betsy's
sister Margaret
writes
her
will
on
June
14th
1828
and
it
is
probated
on
January
5
1829.
In
it,
she
names
her
four
sisters;
Catherine,
who
inherits
all
her
"slaves";
Betsy
wife
of
Norman
McLeod;
Polly,
wife
of
John
McKay;
Nancy,
wife
of
Roderick
Bethune
who
inherits
"all

residue"
of
her
estate;
she
names
her
brother
Daniel
and
her
brother
in
law,
Roderick
Bethune
as
her
co-executors.
The
estate
record
shows
that
she
owned
524
acres
at
the
time
of
her
death
(inherited
by
her
sister
Nancy).
The
estate
record
also
shows
that
Daniel
did
not
physically
appear
in
court
for
probate,
the
executorship
was
carried
out
by
Roderick
Bethune;
this
is
likely
because
Daniel
would
have
been
executing
the
estate
of
Alexander
during
this
time
(effectively
running
the
business
side
of
it)
and
obviously
his
own

Later
records
show
that
the

was
