The
earliest
record
found
is
an
1820
deed
in
which
Angus
purchased
land
on
Beaverdam
Branch
in
Sumter
County.
In
1828,
Margaret
McLeod
wrote
her
Will
naming
her
surviving
brother
and
sisters
(Alexander
having
died
in
1824
and
brother
Norman's
whereabouts
unknown).
The
will
and
probate
proved
the
relationship
to
Angus
McLeod
of
Beaverdam
Branch
due
to
the
specified
inheritances
matching
previous
deeds
from
Angus
to
Margaret
and
her
sister
Catherine;
both
sisters
were
unmarried.
Other
documentation
has
proven
Alexander's
relationship
to
the
family,
even
though
not
named
in
the
Will
of
his
sister,
Margaret.
Angus
and
Nancy
McCutchen
McLeod
are
not
found
in
the
1830
Sumter
Census;
it
was
previously
assumed
that
they
had
both
passed
away
prior
to
that
date,
but
the
1830
Census
enumeration
of
Roderick
and
Nancy
McLeod
Bethune
reveals
the
presence
of
two
elderly
persons,
one
male
and
one
female
in
their
household.
Their
1840
Census
enumeration
in
Macon
County
Alabama
reveals
the
presence
of
an
elderly
female.
Although
not
proven,
it
appears
that
Angus
and
Nancy
lived
with
their
daughter
and
son-in-law
and
that
Nancy
migrated
to
Alabama
with
them
in
1839.
This
appears
to
be
substantiated
by
a
deed
in
1831
in
which
Angus
sells
his
son
Daniel
the
Beaverdam
property
he
had
purchased
in
1820.
Records
have
been
found
showing
that
Nancy
and
Roderick
sold
the
property
inherited
through
the
Will
of
Margaret
McLeod
in
1839
(to
John
Boykin)
and
that
Norman
and
Betsy
McLeod
McLeod
sold
some
of
their
property
on
the
McLeods
Mill
Branch
of
the
Lynches
River
that
same
year.
John
McKay
and
Mary
"Polly"
McLeod
perhaps
also
sold
property
that
year
in
preparation
for
thier
migration
to
Alabama,
research
into
those
records
is
ongoing.
The
McKays,
the
Bethunes,
and
the
McLeods
are
found
in
Macon
County
Alabama
living
near
to
each
other
in
1840.
In
1850
and
1860,
the
Bethunes
are
still
enumerated
in
Macon
County
but
the
McKays
and
the
McLeods
are
found
in
Pike
County.
In
1880,
the
remaining
family
members
are
found
mostly
in
the
newly
formed
Bullock
County,
a
county
taken
from
parts
of
Barrbour,
Macon
and
Pike
Counties.
It
is
believed
at
this
time
that
county
lines
crossed
between
various
census
takings
resulting
in
the
differing
counties
of
enumeration
during
the
1850,
1860
and
1870
census
takings.
It
can
also
be
speculated
that
one
of
Nancy's
deceased
brother
Alexander's
children,
the
youngest
named
Angus,
migrated
with
the
family
into
Alabama.
Numerous
searches
of
the
Kershaw
and
Sumter
district
census
enumerations
of
1840
have
not
revealed
Angus
in
that
area.
We
have
found
all
other
family
members
in
both
states
1840
census
takings
leading
one
to
believe
that
the
young
Angus
was
living
with
relatives.
The
1840
Census
of
Roderick
and
Nancy
reveals
a
male
and
female
aged
20-30
who
do
not
fit
any
of
their
children,
in
addition
to
the
female
aged
60-70.
Although
the
children
of
Alexander
McLeod,
husband
of
Sarah
McIntosh,
largely
became
Baptists
after
the
death
of
their
father
in
1824,
the
remainder
of
the
family
remained
in
the
Presbyterian
denomination.
The
McKays
and
the
Bethunes
attended
Bethel
Presbyterian
Church
in
present
day
Bullock
County
Alabama
and
are
buried
in
that
churches
cemetery.
Roderick
and
Nancy's
children,
Alexander
and
Roderick
Jr.,
were
founding
members
of
another
Presbyterian
Church
in
Union
Springs
about
10
miles
south
of
Bethel
Presbyterian,
a
missionary
church
of
their
home
church.
Norman
McLeod,
the
husband
of
Nancy's
sister
Betsy,
is
possibly
also
shown
as
a
founding
member
of
the
church;
although
this
has
not
yet
been
proven.
Angus
R.
McDonald,
a
son
in
law
of
John
and
Polly
McLeod
McKay,
the
husband
of
their
youngest
daughter,
Mary,
was
elected
Ruling
Elder
and
it
would
appear
that
a
second
daughter,
Mary,
who
was
married
to
Angus
McDonald's
twin
brother,
was
also
a
founding
member.

On

a

These

met
at

Rev.

acted
as
chairman,
and
a

was
organized
with
an
enrollment
of
19

The
following

presented

from

to
be
in
due

and
duly

presenting

came
from
the
Bethel
Presbyterian
Church
located
ten
miles
south
of
Union
Springs
--
a
church
which
may
well
be
called
the
mother
church
of
Presbyterianism
in
Bullock
County.
In
the
records
we
find
that
after
this
organization
meeting,
they
adjourned
to
meet
in
the
Baptist
Church
the
following
morning,
July
24th,
at
11
o'clock.
At
that
hour
a
sermon
was
preached
and
the
persons
above
named
were
solemnly
set
apart
by
prayer,
and
constituted
a
district
Presbyterian
Church
to
be
called
"The
Union

The
Church
so
constituted
and
organized
then
proceeded
to
elect
A.

Wm.

to
the
office
of
Ruling
Elder
and
E.
A.
Pearce
and
John

to
the
office
of
Deacon.
These
men
were
then
ordained
and
installed
in
the
respective
offices
in
due
form.
The
service
closed
with
the
celebration
of
the
Sacrament
of
the
Lord's
Supper.
The
Fall
Minutes
of
the
Presbytery
of
East
Alabama,
1853,
contains
this
record:
"The
Committee
appointed
to
organize
a
Presbyterian
Church
at
Union

Alabama,
made
their
report
to
the
Presbytery
of
East
Alabama
in
Session
at
Wetumpka,
October,
1853,
which
was
received
and
adopted,
and
is
as
follows:
"Your
Committee
would
respectfully
report
to
Presbytery
that
they
met
at
Union
Springs
by
previous
appointment
on
July
23
and
on
July
24,
1853,
and
proceeded
to
organize
by
solemn
consecration
to
God
and
prayer
a
Presbyterian
Church
at
that
place,
to
be
called
the
Presbyterian
Church
of
Union
Springs,
consisting
of
27
members,
two
Elders
and
two
Deacons.
Your
committee
would
recommend
that
the
name
of
this
chuch
be
enrolled
upon
the
Minutes
and
the
Church
received
under
the
care
of
the
Presbytery."
