UPDATE JUNE 2017: "The War Between The States" AVAILABLE NOW. It's 1861 and the call for volunteers to defend the state of South Carolina have gone out. This second book in the Walking With Ghosts series once again combines fictional story telling with factual recitation of the battles our family fought during the war years, with information on the 2nd, 9th/6th, 15th, 19th, 20th and 23rd (Hatches) South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiments, Garden's Palmetto Light Artillery, Rion's Battalion (7th), the Kirkwoods Independent Cavalry Unit and the 3rd Palmetto Light Artillery Battalion and the battles each were engaged in during the war. Note:
Earlier
researchers
of
Catherine
and
her
McLeod
family
placed
her
childhood
home
on
the
Swift
River
in
Kershaw
-
this
Swift
River
reference
was
taken
from
the
writings
of
Catherine's
niece
Nicey
Jane
McLeod
Holland
Hughes
but
recent
research
has
discovered
that
Nicey
was
referencing
the
Swift
River/Creek
property
of
her
own
father,
John
N.
McLeod
(Catherine's
brother).
Whether
some
of
John
N.'s
property
had
been
that
of
his
father
and
inherited
from
that
estate
is
unknown
to
date.
1830
-
1840
Catherine
McLeod
Marriage
to
John
C.
Moseley
Catherine
was
not
present
in
the
1830
Kershaw
District
Census
enumeration
of
her
mother.
Sarah
is
listed
as
a
head
of
household
but
the
ages
of
the
children
present
indicate
that
they
were
brothers
Alexander
E.
McLeod
and
Angus
McLeod
(born
shortly
after
the
1820
census
but
before
January
8
1824
the
date
their
father
wrote
his
Will),
and
her
sister
Jane.
From
the
fact
that
Catherine
was
not
present
in
her
mother's
home
and
that
she
was
aged
about
15-18,
it
could
be
assumed
that
she
and
John
C.
Moseley
were
married
by
1830.
Yet,
some
researchers
have
stated
that
John
was
married
prior
to
his
marriage
to
Catherine
-
where
then
was
Catherine
in
1830?
There
was
extended
family
in
the
area
and
it
is
possible
that
she
was
living
with
one
of
those
families.
John
C.
Moseley
is
said
to
have
been
born
about
1795.
Family
files
differ
on
the
state
of
birth;
some
say
he
was
born
in
Robeson
County,
NC
while
others
state
the
place
of
birth
as
Lancaster
District
South
Carolina.
The
1860
Sumter
County
South
Carolina
Census
states
that
John
was
born
in
North
Carolina
-
yet
the
1850
states
South
Carolina.
In
the
1830
Kershaw
District
Census
-
there
were
four
Moseley's
enumerated
-
Reddick
(said
to
have
been
John's
father),
Matthew,
Lewis,
and
Cradick.
In
Reddick's
household
there
were
three
males
besides
himself
-
1
10-15
and
two
15-20
-
John
would
have
been
aged
about
35
and
so
is
not
present
in
this
household.
Nor
does
a
male
reside
in
any
of
the
other
three
households
that
may
have
been
John
C.
Moseley.
There
do
not
appear
to
have
been
any
Moseley's
in
Sumter
District.

The
Book
Written
by
J.
O.
Mosely
-
he
was
living
in
Charleston,
his
"adopted
home"
at
the
time
of
the
School
Fire
and
hurried
home
to
Camden.
"A
brother
of
the
writer,
J.
H.
Moseley,
who
was
responsible
for
the
presence
of
two
young
ladies
at
the
entertainment,
rescued
both
from
the
burning
building,
and
they
three
were
catching
those
jumping
from
the
windows,
when
a
heavy
person
jumped
into
the
arms
of
one
of
the
ladies
and
crushed
her
to
the
ground,
breaking
a
leg,
and
otherwise
injuring
her,
and
then
the
brother
had
to
leave
off
the
work
of
rescue
and
take
her
to
the
Camden
hospital
six
miles
distant,
and
then
take
the
sister
to
her
home
at
Bishopville,
more
than
twenty
miles
distant,
and
report
to
her
father
the
calamity
that
had
befallen
his
own
home
as
well
as
nearly
every
home
in
the
surrounding
country,
and
had
brought
sorrow
to
the
whole
state
and
the
civilized
world,
and
just
to
mention
almost
any
name
on
the
list
of
killed
or
injured
or
bereaved,
brings
a
tinge
of
sorrow
over
the
soul
of
the
writer,
who
knew
most
intimately
nearly
every
one
so
affected,
for
forty
or
more
years
of
his
life
had
been
spent
in
the
community
and
for
many
years
he
was
superintendent
of
a
Sunday
school
nearby,
and
was
otherwise
pleasantly
associated
with
them.
Nearly
half
of
those
destroyed
were
closely
related
either
by
blood
or
marriage,
and
those
who
were
not
so
related
were
just
as
dear
to
him
as
if
they
were
fleshly
kin.
We
will
mention
them
by
chapters,
or
families,
as
they
appeared
on
the
bulletin
board
at
the
News
&
Courier
office
on
the
morning
after
the
fire.
"
"Then,
at
the
age
of
seventeen,
we,
with
a
brother,
went
to
Thompson
military
school
at
Siler
City,
N.
C.
Eugene
{Brown}
was
among
the
first
to
greet
us
and
give
us
a
welcome
that
we
shall
never
forget,
for
it
was
our
first
trip
so
far
from
home,
and
we
needed
all
the
help
we
could
get
to
keep
us
from
getting
too
homesick.
We
were
intimate
friends
as
long
as
we
were
at
school,
and
then
he
married
Miss
Margaret
Wilson,
who
was
at
one
time
teacher
of
the
Cleveland
school.
