She had lived at the Protestant Home since 1975, when her former home at the old Laubscher Hospital was sold to WVHI. An invalid since an unsuccessful kidney operation in 1929 ended her dream of becoming a missionary, she began writing poems for the "Christian Herald" to support herself. During a career that spanned more than 50 years, she wrote 6 books of prose and about 20 history books and novels. In all, 35 volumes bear her name, all written after she became bedridden. During World War II, many servicemen found comfort in her poem, "Sunrise," which contained the inspirational phrase, "There is no hill in this war-torn world so steep and long that sunrise cannot climb." Her most successful book, "Kentucky Yesterday and Today," was used as a textbook in many Kentucky schools in the 1960's. A book prayer, "For Times Like These," was translated and published in both Japanese and Korean. She also had written a history of the Jews, "After the First Rainbow," using the Bible as the basis of most of her research. She was a 1925 Cum Laude graduate of Georgetown College, and in 1977, the college's president presented her with an honorary doctorate of letters degree. While attending Bowling Green College, she taught high school to support herself. After completing the two-year program there, she taught another two years and then went to Georgetown. A native of Spring Grove, Ky., she was a member of the Woodland Baptist Church there. Survivors include a niece, Mrs. Margaret McCormick of Evansville. Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Whitsell Furnal Home in Morganfield, Ky., with burial in Woodland Church Cemetery at Spring Grove. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. |
