1)Name originally given as Jemima Westcott in Ancestor table of Marjorie Evelyn Van Duzer Campbell, OCGS 5/96. In letter from Marjorie 4/26/1998. (Lil's note: I received a letter from Marjorie in 2002 stating that this was merely a supposition she had made many years ago, based on the appearance of "Westcott" in later gererations as a given name. 2)"The Westcott surname was in error - speculative only. David, son of Jonathan, had a son Henry Westcott, and David's son Jedediah had sons David Westcott and Abner W. Another of David's sons, Joseph had a son Charles W., thus the speculation. 3)"Another surname possibility was listed in Helen Predmore's records, and believe she probably got it from an answer to her query and printed in the OCGS Quarterly of August 1977 [ed. - page 15, left column, about 20 lines from bottom]. Query #6 (P-1) 'Jemima Blackman was the wife of Jonathan Stevens. She was (b) ca 1718 in Fairfield, Conn., dau. of John Blackman and Jemima Hurlbut. She was a sister of Mary Blackman (ca 1720), wife of Elder James Benedict, first minister of Warwick Baptist Church.' (Contributed by Morris Miles, 104 Rosell Ave., Tocele, Utah 84074)." The following is another possibility - perhaps Jonathon married two Jemimas

Predmore raises the question is Jemima second wife? Predmore lists spouse as Jemima (Russell) Blackman (a widow). Marjorie Van Duzer Campbell, Ancestor Table, OCGS Publication May 1996 lists Jemima's name as Westcott. She could not find her reference for that but thought it might have to do with the name Westcott appearing as a middle name in several descendants.

...Mrs Crawford said her Jemima had been baptized along with Joseph and Elisha Stevens, sons of Jonathon Stevens Sr of New Cornwall precinct and Jemima Trickey (Lil's note: I have a copy of this church record and it does not confirm this see below)

I think the reference to Jemima was the one quoted here but this one (the only one I can find in the record) is definitely not this Jemima Blackman SOURCE:Baptisms for the Dead: commencing May 1841.
"James Newberry been baptized for:
My father John Newberry; Mother Jemima Newberry; Sisters: Elizabeth Newberry,
Hannah Newberry, Sophia Demarest; Grandfather Newberry; Grandmother
Newberry; Grandfather Benedic; Grandmother Benedic: Uncles: Jonathan
Newberry, Joseph Newberry, Eady Newberry, John Benedic...Mother's cousin Elisha Stevens...etc. (5 pages)"
Note from Sue Simonich:" James Newberry and his family were with the main body of the Saints in Far West, Caldwell County, Missouri in 1839 as evidenced by the writing of Joseph Smith in "Documentary History of the Church". The ten children of James and Mary smith Newberry at this time would have ranged in ages from daughter Jane, 27 years of age down to Martha Rachel (Patty) age seven years.
When and where they first heard of the Gospel of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints and accepted it is not certain but Sarah Ann (Sally) their fifth child was baptized June 30 1832. Some of the saints were then gathering in Missouri."
LIL's NOTE: James Newberry's Mother was Jemima Benedict. Daughter of Elder James Benedict whose wife was Mary Blackman( see below) sister to Jemima Blackman. We have always felt that Jemima Blackman (daughter of John Blackman) was the wife of Jonathan Stevens and the mother of Elisha. This pretty well nails it.
