In 1854 he purchased property from his sister Martha Chase.

1)Name originally given as Jemima Westcott in Ancestor table of Marjorie Evelyn Van Duzer Campbell, OCGS 5/96.  In letter from Marjorie 4/26/1998. (Lil's note: I received a letter from Marjorie in 2002 stating that this was merely a supposition she had made many years ago, based on the appearance of "Westcott" in later gererations as a given name.

2)"The Westcott surname was in error - speculative only.  David, son of Jonathan, had a son Henry Westcott, and David's son Jedediah had sons David Westcott and Abner W.  Another of David's sons, Joseph had a son Charles W., thus the speculation.

3)"Another surname possibility was listed in Helen Predmore's records, and believe she probably got it from an answer to her query and printed in the OCGS Quarterly of August 1977 [ed. - page 15, left column, about 20 lines from bottom].  Query #6 (P-1) 'Jemima Blackman was the wife of Jonathan Stevens.  She was (b) ca 1718 in Fairfield, Conn., dau. of John Blackman and Jemima Hurlbut.  She was a sister of Mary Blackman (ca 1720), wife of Elder James Benedict, first minister of Warwick Baptist Church.'  (Contributed by Morris Miles, 104 Rosell Ave., Tocele, Utah 84074)."

The following is another possibility - perhaps Jonathon married two Jemimas
SOURCE: Arlene Gable
Predmore raises the question is Jemima second wife? Predmore lists  spouse as Jemima (Russell) Blackman (a widow). Marjorie Van Duzer Campbell, Ancestor Table, OCGS Publication May 1996 lists Jemima's name as Westcott. She could not find her reference for that but thought it might have to do with the name Westcott appearing as a middle name in several descendants.

I think the reference to Jemima was the one quoted here but this one (the only one I can find in the record) is definitely not this Jemima Blackman

Hannah Newberry, Sophia Demarest; Grandfather Newberry; Grandmother
Newberry; Grandfather Benedic; Grandmother Benedic: Uncles: Jonathan
Newberry, Joseph Newberry, Eady Newberry, John Benedic...Mother's cousin Elisha Stevens...etc. (5 pages)"
Note from Sue Simonich:" James Newberry and his family were with the main body of the Saints in Far West, Caldwell County, Missouri in 1839 as evidenced by the writing of Joseph Smith in "Documentary History of the Church". The ten children of James and Mary smith Newberry at this time would have ranged in ages from daughter Jane, 27 years of age down to Martha Rachel (Patty) age seven years.
When and where they first heard of the Gospel of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints and accepted it is not certain but Sarah Ann (Sally) their fifth child was baptized June 30 1832. Some of the saints were then gathering in Missouri."
LIL's NOTE: James Newberry's Mother was Jemima Benedict. Daughter of Elder James Benedict whose wife was Mary Blackman( see below) sister to Jemima Blackman. We have always felt that Jemima Blackman (daughter of John Blackman) was the wife of Jonathan Stevens and the mother of Elisha. This pretty well nails it.

James Demott [Parents] was born about 1750. He died (UNKNOWN). James married Catherine Westlake on 1768.

SOURCE: Arlene Gable from her note:
There is no indication in Helen Roe Predmore's files where she got the information on the family of James and Catherine Westlake Demott. She states " James Demott of Newburgh had a farm of 98 acres along the Hudson River" She also indicates that the oldest 6 children sold out to the youngest Michael 13 Nov 1800.
On another page HRP indicates that Catherine Westlake married ____ Demott from Marlboro, NY. (On a 1989 map Marlboro is a small town on the Hudson River a short distance north of Newburgh - AG)

SOURCE; Eager p 91
Some of the early settlers were of Dutch descent, with a few Huguenots originally from France. Of this class the Hasbroucks, Demotts...may be named as samples, whose families in many instances are here yet...
p 87 - (perhaps Michael is father also to James- LH)
At Balmville Michael Demott lived as early as 1764, and kept tavern, and the Town meetings were occasionally held at his house. He had a number of children among whom were William, Jacobus and Isaac, who inherited the estate, consisting of several hundred acres...
p93- Michael Demott listed as poor master for Newburgh, 1764
p 96 - Isaac Demott listed on Assessment list for Newburgh 1785
p98- Isaac Demott signed Articles of Association at Newburgh
p 101 - Patent listing Michael Demott as one of the Newburgh Patentees
p 200 - discussing a Balm of Gilead Tree names Isaac Demott as tavern keeper at Balmville and tells a long story about the tree. Interesting if the connection is ever made.
