The State of Ohio

Geauga County

On this fourteenth day of September in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred & thirty two, personally appeared in open Court before the judges of the Court of Common Pleas at & for said County of Geauga, now sitting - Retire Trask a resident of Thompson Township in the County of Geauga & State of Ohio aged seventy three years, who being first duty sworn according to law, doth on his said oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congrefs pafsed June 7th 1802 - That he entered the service of the United States under the following named Officers and served as herein stated:

That in the year of 1776 he resided at Beverly in the State of Mafsachusetts, and in the face of that year, sometime as he thinks in the month of November or December, he was drafted to serve a tour of Three months in the American Army - in the company commanded by Captain Joseph Ray of Mafsechusetts Militia soon after went to Lynn where he joined his company, and marched with said company from thence to Bound Brook New Jersey near Brunswick - whilst there was employed on several scouting parties against the Reffugees - He remained stationed there or in that vicinity until his three month tour of service expired when he together with the Company to which he belonged was discharged, & he returned to Beverly in the fore-part of February or March 1777. - In the summer of 1777 he again entered the service in the company commanded by Captain Robert Dodge of Ipswich, in a Regiment of Mafsachusetts Militia commanded by Colonel Ebenezer Francis - marched to Dorchester where he joined the Regiment - They were there stationed to man the works. Whilst there was employed at one time in repairing Boston Castle, which had been blown up, & received a wound in his hand from a Pick-Ax in consequence of which he obtained a furlough & went home where he remained about a fortnight when he returned & went to duty - And continued stationed at Dorchester until hes term of service, which was three months, expired, when he was discharged & returned home late in September - Soon after - & late in the face of the same year, he again entered the service on a tour of three months, in a company of Mafsachusetts Militia commanded by Captain Procter - Isaac Chapman being the first Lieutenant & Curtis Woodbury the second - and marched with the company to Winter Hill near Boston, where he was employed in guarding British prisoners of war taken with Burgoyne, and remained there until the expiration of his term of service, when he was discharged & returned to Beverly -

In the spring of 1780 - he enlisted for six months into the COmpany commanded by Captain Clark in the Regiment commanded by Col. Tupper of the Mafsachusetts line of Continental Troups - The Regiment rendevouzed at West Springfield - And he marched with the Regiment from thence to West-Point - He was attached to the Brigade of General Patterson - and remained stationed at or near West-Point until his tour of service expired; that during that time he remained there - he was detached with about forty men & stationed in a Block House a short distance below West-Point on the River - At the time he went there - a British Man of War Vefsel lay off in the River nearly opposite the Block House - It was said to have been the Vefsel from which Arnold went after the arrest of Andre - He remained there about a fortnight during which time he attended the execution of Major Andre - which took place a short distance above said Block House - He was gone but a few hours when he returned to the Block House - He thinks the name of the place was Orangetown - soon after the execution of Andre - he returned to West-Point - was discharged, & returned home to Beverly - having served at this time six months.

Thus he continued to reside at Beverly after his return from West Point about (???) years when he moved to Ackworth in the State of New Hampshire - where he resided until he removed to Thompson aforesaid in 1810 ~ 11 - where he has ever since resided - That he has no documentary evidence, and that he knows of no person whose testimony he can procure, who can testify to his service.

He hereby relinquishes any claim whatever to a pension or annuity, except the present, and declares that his name in not on the pension Roll of the agency of any State.-

(Signatures follow of Retire Trask the clerk, Aiken)

We Seth Hulbert and Richard Spraque residing the the township of Thompson in the County of Geauga aforesaid, hereby certify that we are well acquainted with Retire Trask, who has subscribed & sworn to the above declaration; that we believe him to be seventy three years of age; that he is reputace (sic) and believed in the neighborhood where he resides to have been a soldier of the Revolution, and that we concur in that opinion -

(Signatures follow of Seth Hulbert and Richard Sprague and the clerk, Aiken.)

And the said Court do hereby declare their opinion after the investigation of the matter, and after putting the interogatories prescribed by the War Department, that the above named applicant was a Revolutionary Soldier, & served as he states - And the Court further certifies that it appears (???) that Seth Hulbert & Richard Sprague who have signed the preceding certificate, are credible persons, and that their statement is (???) to credit.

Notes for JANE C. BROCKWAY:

Obituary from the Jefferson Gazette, December 10, 1907:

Dec. 6, Hartsgrove - Mrs. Benjamin Trask, aged 84 years old passed into the better land, yesterday at the old homestead, two and one-half miles west of Hartsgrove, where they have lived for years, having moved to Hartsgrove over 50 years ago. She with her husband were pioneers, settling in the woods and by their sturdy hands and hearts built them a nice home and ten children came to bless them. Eight are still living. At their family reunions which have arways been at the old farm home, there has sat down to those sumptuous tables, one hundred and ten children to the fourth generation. We know of not another such family in Hartsgrove, save perhaps, the Arthur Carraher family. Funeral will be held at the old homestead, Saturday, Dec. 7.
