MARY GILBURN (1820- 1895?)
John and Mary both appear to have been born and raised in County Kerry, Ireland.
They were married in Ireland but the location and date are unknown. John
and his family came to the United States some time after 1850 and by 1855
the family was located somewhere in Iowa. By 1857, the family had moved to
Illinois and finally moved to Minnesota in the early 1860s. In 1861, John
settled on a farm in Empire Township. in Dakota County, Minnesota.

Both Mary and John were from Ireland. Their eldest child, Patrick,
was born in Illinois; son John and the rest of the children were born in
Minnesota. This family living in Elba Township, Winona County (1870),
Ripley Township, Dodge County (1880), and Croke County, Traverse County (1900).

In 1900, Mary reported having had 14 children with 10 living. It appears
that son, John M., was farming next to his parents in Croke, Traverse
County.
Son Thomas was a railroad man progressing from conductor in 1900 to yardmaster
in 1920. Michigan census records indicate the children of Thomas and
Minnie were: Raymond (1900- ), Garrett? (1903- ), John M. (1905- ),
J. William (1907- bef 1920?), and George D. (1915-).

In 1880, Thomas and Mary were living in Farmington, Dakota County, Minnesota
with children Mary Jane and James. By 1900, Thomas, Mary, and son James
were living in St. Paul, Minnesota.
There was a Grace M. Alton born in 1901 and died in Dakota County in 1990
whose mother was a Dougherty.

John was born in Ireland and came to Minnesota with his family. He grew up
in Empire Township in Dakota County. After his marriage, he moved to Credit
River Township in Scott County where his children were born.

In 1910, Thomas J. and Mary were living on McLean Avenue in St. Paul.
Mary's nickname was Martha. This couple had three known children:
Harold J. (1903- ), John Francis (1904-1959), and Margaret M. (1906-
). Thomas was the proprietor of Twin City Picture Framing Company,
a picture framing shop in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Patrick and Florence farmed in Credit River Township, Scott County, Minnesota
in the early 1900s. They had two known children: Richard D.
(1909- ) and Sylvia (1910-1998). Sylvia married Gordon Sayers
(1904-1982) and this couple were buried at Greenwood Presbyterian Cemetery
in Eureka Township, Dakota County, Minnesota.
In 1910, Mary and Raymond Steele and Mary's sister, Anna, were living in
St. Paul, Minnesota. Raymond, a Michigan native, was a traveling salesman
of stereoscopic views and met Mary on his travels. By 1920, Mary and Raymond
were in Greenfield Township, Wayne County, Michigan and Raymond had switched
careers to become a real estate developer. The known children of Mary
and Raymond Steele are: Frank C. (1903-1962), Lester J. (1903-1959), and
Margaret Lois (1916-1998). Lois married Eric Hedberg (1908-1971). Minnesota
records suggest that Mary and Raymond had a 4th child - a baby that died
shortly after birth on June 6, 1911. For more information on Mary,

Anna L. married Patrick Kelly, son of Irish immigrant pioneer farmers who

This may be the same George Alton who was reported to have killed a man in
a knife fiight in Rosemount following a card game. It is possible that George
left the area as a result of this incident. In 1880 George and his family
were residing in Stevens County, Minnesota. By 1900, this family was living
in Minneapolis, Minnesota. George was a carpenter.
