Richard "had a grocers shop in Castlefinn and farm in Castlefinn. ... Richard was an agent for a London firm, W.F. Lucas, and distributed [material to make] shirts and lingerie to workers ..." The workers would then sew the materials into finished garments in their own homes. "At that time they were all hand sewn. He went out 5 days a week to different centres [centers] within 6-7 miles radius of Castlefinn bringing the goods by horse and trap. My father [William Gallagher, #31] helped him with this distribution and with the farm. Later they started a factory and the shirts were made by machine but the fine linen lingerie was still sewn and embroidered by hand in the workers homes. After World War I the firm in London went bankrupt as there was no demand for this type of garment. My farther [William Gallagher, #31] inherited the farm and factory when Richard died in 1891."[13]
