The Kilzer Families

Prepared by Sean Furniss
Revised 20 April 2001

The information that was used to start this record was provided by Paul Kilzer (#32) and Paul R. Kilzer (#41). Additional information about the early Kilzer family records were provided by Ruth I. Kilzer (#42). Early Kilzer family records are recorded in the bible belonging to Ruth J. Weber, a decendent of Edward Kilzer. Additional records are recorded in the "Palatines to America Immigrant File." Other family members also generously contributed copies of records and provided information about their families.

A variety of spellings of the family surname exist and include the following: Kültzer, Kueltzer, Kiltzer and Kilzer. The Kilzer spelling came into use with the emigration of the family to the United States in 1838 and has remained unchanged since the early 1800's.

Although these records show Germany as the country of origin for this family, it should be kept in mind that during the 1700's and early 1800's Germany did not exist as a country. During that time period, this area of present day Germany was made up of city states, dukedoms and kingdoms. While this family lived in Rinthal during the early 1800's, they found themselves in the Kingdom of France, followed by the Kingdom of Prussia.

This internet version is an edited version of the source document. Information about living members of this family has been reduced to protect their privacy.

He moved to Dakota City, Nebraska, in 1943 to farm. In the spring of 1945, Paul and his family returned to Walthill, Nebraska, after Lela's brother died and left her his farm. Paul and Lela later purchased additional farmland to double the size of their acreage.

He was married on 27 April 1932 on the Kellner farm at Walthill, Nebraska, to Lela E. Kellner. Paul and Lela were married on her parents golden wedding anniversary. Notice of the wedding can probably be found in the Walthill paper. Lela Kellner was born 23 June 1906 at Pender, Nebraska. She died 4 September 1987 at the Countryside Retirement Home, Sioux City, Iowa. She is buried at Lyons, Nebraska, because she liked the cemetery lots at Lyons better than those at Walthill. Lela's parents were Edward Kellner (born in Germany; died and buried in Walthill, Nebraska about 1942) and Lena Myer (?) (believed to have been born in Germany; died and buried in Walthill, Nebraska about 1937). Edward Kellner was a farmer and a deputy sheriff for Thurston County, Nebraska.

Lela graduated from high school in Winnebago, Nebraska in 1923. She attended Wayne State Teachers College and was a graduate of the 2 year teachers program. She taught school for 19 years at Walthill, Dakota City and Kennard, Nebraska.

An interesting note regarding Lela's father occurred during World War I. Her father, Edward Kellner, and her brother, Adolph Kellner, had been at sea for several days on their way back to Germany, when one morning the sun came up over the stern (back) instead of over the bow (front) of the boat.
