Martha graduated from Crescent Valley High School at Corvallis, Oregon. She attended Good Samaritan Hospital Nursing School at Portland, Oregon, and Arizona Western College at Yuma, Arizona. She has served boards of the Community Preschool and the Forest Edge Parent Teachers Association. During the summers, she works as a volunteer at Wolftrap, the National Park for the preforming arts. She works as a parent teacher liaison at Forest Edge Elementary School.
She married Sean Barry Furniss at Corvallis, Oregon, shortly after Sean returned from Colombia, South America. Sean was born at the 98th General U.S. Army Hospital, Munich, Germany. He is the son of Clinton Chollet Furniss, Jr., and Maire Keenan.
Sean received his bachelor of science degree in wildlife biology at Humboldt State University, Arcata, CA. Sean served in the U.S. Army as a basic training instructor at Fort Ord, CA, and in South Viet Nam at Camp Evans, 30 miles south of the Demiliterized Zone with Company C, 1st Battalion, 506th Light Infantry, in the third brigade of the 101st Airborne Division. He received a bronze star while serving in Viet Nam. After returning from Viet Nam, Sean spent two years working at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge near Burns, Oregon. He then went to graduate school at Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon, where he finished his master of science degree in wildlife ecology . He served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Colombia, South America, where he conducted ornithological studies at the Carimagua Experimental Station in the Department of Meta in the eastern llanos of Colombia.
Martha and Sean lived at Yuma, Arizona, while Sean worked at the Imperial National Wildlife Refuge at Martinez Lake, Arizaona. At Yuma, Martha attended Arizona Western College. They lived at Boqueron, Puerto Rico, when Sean worked as the project leader at the Caribbean Islands National Wildlife Refuges based at the Cabo Rojo Refuge. They moved to Reston, Virginia, while Sean worked at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Washington office, which is located in Arlington, Virginia.
All three of their daughters were born at the Bella Vista Hospital at Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. The three girls births are registered in Puerto Rico so their legal name includes both surnames Furniss Vohs. They were considered to be hispanic by the U.S. Dept. of Education because their place of origin is Puerto Rico. The three girls were christened at St. Anne's Episcopal Church in Reston, Virginia, by the Rev. John H. Hatcher, Jr. Their godmother was P. J. Miller, a family friend.[172]
