Feeding the chickens

Taken on Gaddis farm in Dallas, Texas on April 16, 1944
Bettie bought 100 chicks each spring for the family...they ate the chickens, saved some for laying eggs, and some to raise more chicks, but Grandma purchased more each spring to last the next year. She was able to sell some of the eggs to neighbors, but it took two chickens per meal just for their own family.

One year my brother, Phillip Ray Lyon, and my cousin, Darlene Green, were out back playing with the little chicks.....my grandmother came out the back door as she caught Darlene catching the chicks, my brother would "snap" the chickens (like he saw Grandma do when when she was preparing them for dinner,) and feeding them to the family farm dog......Grandma said Darlene and Phillip got a "good tanning".....but never did it again:)
