I hope to add a whole lot of documents that are pertinent to the Gallup
family. I have asked Lynn Gallup permission to post these letters. I
personally found them to be quite exciting from a historical perspective.
To see the handwriting and letters that came from the Revolutionary War era is
rare...to have them connected personally to me because of my ancestry is very
exciting. These letters were written by Obadiah Gore & Obadiah Gore,
Jr. to Nathaniel Gallup and Hannah Gore. I am providing a scanned image
(Lynn produced this image, by the way) and a translation. Let me know what

Westmorland June 22nd 1778,
Dear Brother and Sister After our love to You and your children these few
lines may inform you of our health through the Divine Goodness. It is a time of
health in general though some difficulty with the Indians and torys. About 30
miles up the Susquehannah there has been a number taken by the Enemy and carried
to Niagery fort - perhaps 20! and we have had some suspicion of some of that
number Killed, but not certain. 16th Inst[?] Capt Robins son Miner [?] and one
Joel Phelps and four more went up the river about the afor mentioned distance in
two canoes, and came near a number of Indians and torys, the number not known,
who called to them and bid them surrender but our men thought not best to be
made prisoner - made off in the Canoes as fast as possible! The indians shot at
them a large number of Guns, and wounded the aforesaid Robbins and Phelps, and
shot a great many bullets, which struck the canoes and paddles, and the four
other men remained unhurt: they came down the River, and the next morning Mr
Robins died - being shot through the belly, and Phelps was shot more on the side
- there seems some hope of his recovery. We have forts. We Keep a watch and have
sent to the Board of war for help - My two oldest sons are in Continental
service. Obadiah a Lieut in Col [?]yth's Regiment, [?] of Daniel Lieut in a
Company raised for our defense here, under Capt Detrick Hewitt. Remember my love
to brother Hobart and family, and all inquiring friends: I take it a good deal
hard of you that you never write to me. - I want to know whether you ever hear
from brother Samuel or Moses and want to hear of any thing that is remarkable.
So no more at present but remain your sincere friend and loving brother Obah
Gore. [The following note is added at the bottom of the letter:] [?]B. This
letter of which the forgoing is a true copy was directed to Capt Nathaniel
Gallup at Stonington in [??] of Elisha Williams Esq.
Obadiah Gore letter of Wyoming Massacre 3 July 1778, Wyoming Valley,
Pennsylvania. Written to Nathaniel Gallup, husband of his Aunt Hannah Gore.

Westmoreland 7th March 1779
Sir: I have been in the Continental Service Ever since the beginning of
August 1776 and was at the White Plains when the Enemy cut off this place last
July. You doubtless have heard the particulars of the Action in Which I lost
three of own brothers. Viz: Silas, Asa and George, and two brothers in law
Timothy Pierce and John Murphy --- Daniel and Samuel was in the battle but
escaped, --- Our families were all drove out from this Settlement without the
help of horses and cattle, and with no more than what they could carry out
through the wilderness on their backs. And our buildings all burnt and our
household Furniture and clothing all carried away or destroyed, but we have got
the possession again and have about 140 Continental Soldiers here, besides a
number of inhabitants that has returned, and we have a very strong fort with
Artillery and provisions plenty....... Father moved back his family in Nov. Last
and he took the small pox of which he died the 10th of January last--- Mother
and the children has had it by inoculation and recovered and now live with me.
Daniel and his family & Silas widow and her children are here,-- Asas, widow
and her child is at Preston, Hannah and her children is at Plainfield. Lucy and
her children are at Canaan.... It is a healthy time with us at present. We have
no news or nothing, nor nothing new happening here since the 10th of last month
when a party of Indians came down & and killed 3 men, and wounded another
who has since recovered. The Indians lost one killed dead on the spot and two
others badly wounded as apparent by the blood, but we could not catch them --- I
desire to be remembered to Aunt and all my cousins. Mother desires to be
remembered to you and your family.

Currituck County, being
in Reasonable health and Sound mind and memory thanks be to God for the Same do
make and
ordain this my last will and Testament in manner and form following to wit–
Item 1 I lend the use of my plantation whereon I now live to my wife Polly
Gallop during her
natural life if She choses to live on it Runing up the point to a read(?) hill
thence west to the
Sound Except one of land where on the wind mill stands and the mill, also lend
unto my wife
Polly Gallop the following negroes to wit Negro man old Messick and his son
little messick, and
woman Isbal, unto my wife Polly Gallop during her natural life or widowhood I
lend the use of
half Dozen chairs our bed and furniture, one chest one beaufat and furniture two
Pots one dutch
oven and tea kittle two Pot Iron trammels two old Tables, all the Spun and
spinning Stuff all the
pottry all the provisions on hand or enough for her and her family For two
months, also three
cows and calves and one third part of my hogs her choice one pair of firedogs,
one small canoe
one hand mill one young mare called fly one bridle and Saddle one loom and
harness two narrow
axes three hoes one Plow and Gun during her natural life or widowhood.
Item I Give and bequeath unto my Son Hodges Gallop the following Tracts of land
on the North
Banks one tract lying East of Nothern Gut known by the Melson tract one lying
East of Jane Guit
Creek formaly John Gallops deceased also the tract I live on Called Martins
Point from the Creek
to the Sound up to the Waterfence also my Wind Mill thereon Also the residue of
my lands on the
North Banks which I do not Give away in this will or by deeds of Gift I also
Give unto my son
Hodges Gallop the following tracts of land on Powells Point one tract where
Samuel Murrell lived
also one I bought of Hezekiah Owens also the piece I bought of John Dough,
adjoining the other,
also the tract I bought of James G. Hall also the tract adjoining which I bought
of Sidney Lamb,
also the Residue of my lands that I own on Powells Point which I do not Give
away in this will or
by deeds of Gift. I also Give my son Hodges Gallop the following negroes to wit
old Mesick and
his son little Mesick, woman Isbal after my wifes death or marriage I also unto
son Hodges
Gallop girl Matilda and child Barsheba, man Mustapher, Boy Obed, Girl Sally,
Mary child of
Vina, Lydia and child Polly, Dick and Solomon, George, Malachi, Jack, Aaron, and
James. I also
Give unto my son Hodges Gallop all my money or notes that he may have in his
possession at my
death also all the house hold furniture that belongs to at his house on Powells
Point I also Give
Unto my Son Hodges Gallop the Schooner High Priest and her materals I also Give
my son
Hodges Gallop Iron chest to him and his heirs forever.
Item I Give and bequeath unto my Daughter Bretainia Bean one tract of land on
Powells Point
which I bought of Daniel Doudy also a another tract adjoining which I bought of
Luke Gregory
also one on the North Banks beginning at Thomas Harris’ line runing South far as
will include one
hundred acres of land. I also Give unto my daughter Bretainia Bean the followin
negroes to wit
woman Betsy her two children City and Eliza. I also Give my daughter Bretainia
Bean five
hundred dollars in money or notes if as much on hand at my death to her and her
heirs forever.
Item I give and bequeath unto my daughter Mavey D. Doudy one tract of land on
the North
Banks which I bought of Spence Hall whereon Jno. Pateridge decd formaly lived
also one piece I
bought of Benjamin Dough I also Give unto my daughter Mavey D. Doudy the
following negroes
to wit negro Thomas, Girl Rose, Girl Nancy, and woman Sally and one Cow and Calf
and bed and
furniture also five hundred dollars in money or notes if as much on hand at my
death to her and
her heirs forever.
Item I Give and bequeath unto my daughter Golden Pateridge one tract of land on
Powells Point
which I bought of Malachi Corble whereon she now lives. I also Give unto my
daughter Golden
Pateridge the following negroes to wit negro boy David and Girl Rachel also five
hundred dollars
in money or notes if as much on hand at my death to her and her heirs forever.
Item I Give and bequeath unto my Legitimate son Zadock Gallop a tract of land on
Powells Point
known by the Morres tract adjoining Abel Owens deceased lands, also a piece I
bought of
Solomon Ashbee adjoining the Same also one Bed and furniture one Cow and Calf
also two
hundred and fifty dollars in money or notes if as much on hand at my death to
him and his heirs
forever.
Item I Give and bequeath unto Kimley Rodgers a piece or parcel of land on the
North Banks
containing Seventy five acres lying on the North Side of the lands formaly
belonging to Jasper
Green whereon his mother now lives also negro Girl Milley and boy Miles one bed
and furniture
in the possession of his Mother, also all the Stock in his mark or in the
possession of his mother
also one mare colt named little Gin, also two hundred and fifty dollars in money
or notes if as
much on hand at my death to him and his heirs for ever.
Item I Give and bequeath unto Iredel Rodgers Seventy five acres of land Situated
on the North
Banks lying to the north and adjoining Kimley Rodgers, runing from the Creek to
the Sea also one
negro Girl Hanner(?) and boy Washington one bed and furniture all the hogs or
Cattle in the
following mark namely Swallowfork the left Ear Crop and under Keel the right Ear
also two
hundred and fifty dollars in money or notes if as much on hand at my death to
him and his heirs.
Item I Give and Bequeath unto Willis P. Rodgers Seventy five acres of land on
the North Banks
lying North and adjoining Iredels runing from the creek to the sea also one
negro boy named
Caleb and Girl Vilot one bed and furniture one Cow and Calf also two hundred and
fifty dollars in
money or notes if as much on hand at my death also one mare called old Gin and
my Short two
Barrel Gun to him and his heirs forever.
Item I Give and bequeath Unto my Son Hodges Gallop all the residue of my money
and notes not
given away in this will that is on hand at my death to him and his heirs
forever.
Item My will and desire is that all my chattle Property that is not Given away
in this will to be
sold and after paying all my Just debts and Expenses the residue of said sail to
be equally divided
together with the book accounts amongst names to wit Hodges Gallop, Bretainia
Bean, Mavey
D. Doudy, Golden Pateridge, Zadock Gallop, Kimley Rodgers, Iredel Rodgers, and
Willis P.
Rodgers if all living at the time if not, amongst the living ones.
Item My will and desire is that the chattle property lent to my wife at her
death or marriage be
Sold at Public Sale and the proceeds arising therefrom be equally divided
amongst the above
mentioned names and in the above manner.
Lastly I nominate and appoint my Son Hodges Gallop and Caleb T. Sawyer my whole
and Sole
Executors to this my last will and Testament Ratifying and confirming this to be
my last will and
Testament and no other Given under my hand and Seal this the Twelvth day of
November in the
year of one thousand eight hundred and forty-four.
Signed Sealed and pronounced and delivered by the Testator to be his last will
and Testament
