EUROPEAN TRIP

Across the Fence

By Arvord Abernethy

If you should ask any of the seven young people about their recent trip to Europe, you would get a common answer, “It was really great”.

There were about 80 people on the tour, but the ones from around here were, Tresa Brown, Jill Cowan, Jenny Smith of Clifton, Russell Scott, Stanton Blackburn and Nathan and Beth Abernethy as sponsors. Jenny is the granddaughter of the Bill Stricklands.

The trip took them through England, France, Switzerland, Italy, West Germany and Holland. Each country had its interesting features, but it seems that each one thought highly of Switzerland because of its outstanding scenic beauty, the cleanliness of everything and the friendliness of the people.

When I was talking with Jill, she told me that a very exciting trip to her was the cable car trip to Disblerets Glacier. There is ice and snow there the year round, so it is a popular place for skiing. They were up there on a clear day and one could see about four countries from its peak.

As they went into Switzerland, some got a thrill that they had rather done without. Instead of taking the tunnel that goes through the mountains, the bus driver took them up over the St. Bernard Pass which is very steep and winding in places.

Nathan and Beth got a treat that was not on the tour schedule. They were housed one night in a small rural village in Switzerland when they heard singing and music. They went out and started walking toward the music when they met a lady who could speak a little English. She told them that it was a birthday celebration for an 80 year old man. The singing had a lot of yodeling in it. There were several instruments accompanying them.

Jill had a special appreciation for some people in Lucerne. She had been keeping a diary of the trip, but happened to leave it in a shop in Lucerne. She had given up seeing it again, but a few days ago it arrived in the mail.

Tress and Jenny found much in Italy, especially in Rome, to interest them. The huge cathedrals were beautiful within themselves, but they were filled with paintings, statues and other art works which are considered the best in the world. Tress was especially impressed with Michelangelo’s “Pleta”. This is a statue of the dead Christ in the arms of his mother. Michelangelo completed this early in his life, but it is one of his best works.

Holland was also an interesting place as they were housed in private homes there; right where they could see the everyday life of the people. The communication was not always the best, but the friendliness of the hosts and the home-cooked meals were.

It would be impossible to tell all the thrills and exciting things that happened, but they brought back lots of brochures, pictures and things for friends to see. Maybe some day you will have a chance to see some of them.
