HATS,
etc.

Speaking
of hats, I remember several years back when I was drawn on a jury with
Mrs. Odie (Janie May) Shaffer. It was back when ladies still wore hats
around here. She said that she told Robert Williams that morning that she
would gladly swap her jury check for a hat she saw at Garner-Alvis store.
We thought that the case would be over in one day, but it dragged on for
six days, and Janie May never mentioned the hat after the second day.
Mr.
Shaffer passed away about three years ago and now Mrs. Shaffer has sold
her home and moved to Gatesville. One could say that we are losing the
last of another pioneer family; Janie May moved to the Spurlin-Sunshine
community while a girl and that was Odie’s home also.
We
who live up in this part of town will always have a picture in our mind of
Odie out walking their little dog. Odie always had his pipe in his mouth
and it was pointing straight ahead. If you missed seeing Odie and his
pipe, just watch Charles Newsom for a while and you will get the picture.
The
Garland Shorts bought the Shaffer home at 801 E. Leslie and have fixed it
up for their daughter, Betty Lou Bell. If you have passed up that way
lately you will have noticed the great amount of landscape work that they
have done. They have also done painting and repair work to the interior of
the house.
Betty
Lou is employed by the Farmers Home Administration. We are happy to have
her and her two sons, Kyle who is ten years old and Brian who is six. The
boys have already found friends in the Little League ball clubs
