building was constructed about 1873. It is a two-story building, built
of rock, now having one entrance, formerly with two entrances-one of
which was a stairway leading from the outside to the upper story. The
construction of the building was overseen by William Snell and William
T. Claunch. The land was deeded by Dr. Stout, who constructed the
building.
At
the time the building was constructed the Masons of this county
organized the “Rock House Lodge” in the upper story, which was used
for the purpose of lodge meetings. The Rock House Lodge meetings were
held in the building for some ten years; after which it was moved to the
present location,
Hamilton
.
The
lower story was, and has always has been, used for school and church
purposes.
Rock
House school building is the oldest school building now in use in
Hamilton
County
. W. D. Snell, still a resident of our community, started to school in
this building. The first teacher to teach in this building was Mr.
Burton. At that time the Indians were still raiding the country, causing
Mr. Burton to have to carry his pistol with him to school.
From
time to time changes have been made on the inside of the building;
however, few have been made to change the outside appearance.
At
present, we have two teachers with 33 students enrolled, and seven
grades. The school ground has improvements as all schools do.
Miss
Faye Henderson is teacher of the primary grades. This is her fourth term
