Directions:  From the southeast corner of the courthouse square in Hamilton (intersection of Hwy. 36 and Bell Street) proceed east (toward Gatesville) 3 blocks.  Turn right (south) on Reagan Street which will also be FM 932 & FM 1241.  After 5 blocks FM 932/1241 turns left on Standefer Street for one block and  right on S. Dempster Street.  Four block later FM932/1241 turns left (east) and leaves Hamilton.  Almost a mile out of Hamilton FM 932 turns left to Aleman and FM1241 continues straight.  Stay on FM1241 about 3.5 miles.  Watch for a church-shaped sign (across the road from a tall faded-pink water tower) pointing to Blue Ridge Baptist Church.  Two gravel roads join FM1241 at this point. The west portion of the Blue Ridge Cemetery will be on the left side of the road. Take the gravel road on the left and proceed east to the end of the road. . The main portion of the Blue Ridge Cemetery is behind Blue Ridge Baptist Church.

On 17 August, 1897, John Hannah Brown deeded a lot to be used" as a burial ground and for no other purpose" to the public of Hamilton County, Texas, for the price of one dollar. This tract of land was immediately north of a lot he had previously sold to the Blue Ridge Baptist Church. This cemetery is known as the Blue Ridge Cemetery. It is between the lot on which Blue Ridge Baptist Church is located and the private Powell-Brown Cemetery. John Hannah Brown deeded the west portion of the Blue Ridge Cemetery (which contains only four graves) for public use on 28 August, 1915--ninteen days after the death of my child-aunt, Mary Eunice Crain, who was the first person to be buried in this cemetery. This cemetery was abandoned for further burials because the rocky base made grave digging too difficult.

MAIN SECTION

(North of Blue Ridge Baptist Church)

Established: 17 August, 1898

The main section of Blue Ridge Cemetery is behind (north) of Blue Ridge Baptist Church four miles southeast of Hamilton on an un-numbered dirt road which connects to FM 1241. The west portion of Blue Ridge Cemetery is on the north side of the road which goes to the church. At one time the west portion was between Verge Grisham’s "filing station" and Blue Ridge School, No. 22. The west portion is across FM 1241 and the un-numbered church road north of the Multi-County Water Storage Tank.

John Hannah Brown sold for the price of one dollar to the public of Hamilton County a tract or parcel of land out of an 82 acre subdivision of Hamilton County School Survey, No. 13 for the main portion of this cemetery. Hamilton County Deed Record Book 6, p. 449. The main portion of the cemetery joined the north side of the land previously given by Mr. Brown to Blue Ridge Baptist Church as recorded in Bk. 6, Pg. 172, Deed Records of Hamilton County

The State of Texas, County of Hamilton, Known all Men by these Presents: That I, J. H. Brown of the County of Hamilton, and State aforesaid, for and in consideration of the sum of One Dollar, to me in hand paid and for the further consideration of setting apart to the public use, the hereinafter described tract, lot or parcel of land, as a burial ground, and for no other purpose.

Have GRANTED, SOLD, and CONVEYED, and by these presents do GRANT, SELL AND CONVEY, unto The Public use of the County of Hamilton and State of Texas, all that certain tract or parcel of land out of an 82 acre subdivision of Hamilton County School Sur. No. 13, formerly Deeded to my by Hamilton County, And the lot hereby conveyed being described as follows; to wit: Beginning six varas N 71_ degrees West from the N. E. cor. of a lot heretofore sold by me to the Blue Ridge Baptist Church, which deed to said church is of record in Book six, on page 172 Deed Records Hamilton Co., Texas, on the N. Line of said Church lot; Thence N. 19 E. Parallel with and 6 varas from the E. Line of said 82 acre subdivision, to 63 varas, to N. E. cor. of this lot: Thence N. 71 W. 94 varas to N. W. cor. this lot; Thence S. 19 W 63 varas to S. W. cor. of this lot; Thence S. 71E. 94 varas on N. line said Church lot to the place of beginning. To be used by the public for a burial ground but for no other purpose.

August 17, 1898. Bk. 6, p. 449 Hamilton County Deed Records

The names of people interred in this cemetery is derived from the survey made before 1948 by my parents--Robert Verne Crain and Clara Elsie Fergusson Crain and surveys of 5 July, 1992, and 18 April, 1998, done by Ray Rowland Weathers and Elreeta Ann Crain Weathers.
