Claude Caddel, 87, of Bee House died Feb. 21, 2004 at Waco. Funeral services were held Feb. 23 in the Evant Funeral Chapel with Reid Schaub officiating. Burial followed in the Bee House Cemetery. He was born October 30, 1916 in Lampasas County, the son of William Jackson Caddel and Mary Francis Caddel. In May of 1958 he was married to Mary Carathers Cummings. 

Mr. Caddel was a farmer and rancher and for a number of years. He and his wife ran the Bee House store and post office. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; seven sisters, Ola Crawford, Dollie Hunziker, Susie Caddel, Mary Hunziker, Minnie May Carroll, Jane Caddel, Kasie Lee Creacy; five brothers, one dying in infancy, Andrew Baines Caddel, William Bailey Caddel, John Caddel and Thurston Jackson Caddel. 

Survivors include his wife; two stepsons, Gerald Cummings and wife Karen of Izora and Jim Cummings of Pearl; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. 

Pallbearers were Don Hunziker, Daryl Hunziker, Dorman Hunziker, Noak Gene Creacy, Cliff Barnard, Martin Zimmerman, Jimmy Schellenburger and Jimmy Cummings. 

Honorary Pallbearers were William Gerald Cummings and Scott Cummings.

Gladys Irene Caldwell, 90, died Jan. 20 at Peoples Nursing Home in Dublin. Graveside services were held at Hazeldale Cemetery on Jan. 22 with Rev. Ronnie Calcote officiating. Harrell Funeral Home in Dublin was in charge of arrangements. 

She was born Nov. 23, 1909 in Mills County, the daughter of James Marion Stamp and Snora Bell Winters Stamp. 

She had attained the highest rank in Rebecca Lodge and she was a Baptist. 

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Thomas Kary Lee; her husband Thomas Caldwell; her son, Jimmy Darrell Lee; five brothers, William Henry Stamp, Aubry Otto Stamp, James Travis Stamp, Leolen (Dood) Stamp, L.V. (Dock) Stamp; a sister, Annie Mozell Pool and a great-grandson, Tyson Crisp. 

Survivors include her three daughters, Lovie Humphries, Norma Jane Adams, Doris Nell Crisp; a son, Billy Joe Lee; her sister, Odessa May Summers; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. 

CALHOUN, ROBERT L.

Robert L. Calhoun, 82 of Florissant, Colo., died in a Colorado nursing home March 1, and services were held in Colorado. 

Mr. Calhoun was born July 2, 1917, the son of Rob and Bell Calhoun of the Ohio community. 

Survivors include a daughter, Vickey Sherman of Pleasant Grove, Utah; a brother, T. J. Calhoun of Florissant, Colo.; and a sister Iberia Upton of Hamilton.


CALLAWAY, MARGARET( MELTON) (HUEY)

Margaret Melton Callaway, 82, of Purmela, died Friday, April 9, in Harker Heights. 

Graveside services were Saturday, April 10, at the Bar C Ranch with John Ingram officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Scott's Funeral Home. 

Mrs. Callaway was born Jan. 26, 1917, at Mound, the daughter of Arthur and Clara Melton. She graduated from Gatesville High school in 1936 and attended the Federal Institute in Tyler for two years. She owned and operated Callaway Tax Service in Gatesville from 1960 until her retirement in 1987. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Gatesville. She was married to Tom Callaway on Oct. 4, 1966 and they lived on the Bar C Ranch near Purmela. He preceded her in death on Feb. 7, 1975. 

Survivors include two daughters, Penny Melbern of Gatesville and Jacque Taylor of Austin; two sons, Sam Lee Huey of Temple and Robert T. Huey of Gatesville; a brother, Bill Melton of Thornton; three grandchildren, David, Ellisa and Robert; and a great-grandchild, Taylor Bradley. 

Pallbearers were Larry Smart, Clay McClellan, Bill Melbern, David Young, Ervin Koerth and Paul Young.

 

CALVERT, FRANCES DRUCILLA (FREELAND)

Frances Drucilla Calvert, 87, died Feb. 22, 2003, in Hamilton. Graveside services were held Feb. 25 at Ridge Park Cemetery in Hillsboro with memorial service at Riley Funeral Home Chapel in Hamilton.

Mrs. Calvert was born April 28, 1915, in Hillsboro, Texas, the daughter of James W. and Ella Rasco Freeland. She was a former resident of Austin where she was an administrator with the Texas State Tuberculosis Assn. She worked at the State Hospital, and later became a realtor. Before her retirement in 1980, she was employed by the State Governor’s Office and served under several state governors.

After moving to Hamilton, Mrs. Calvert became active in numerous community projects as a member of the Woman’s Council, the Twentieth Century Club, the DAR, and the Genealogy Society.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and John David Pool of Hamilton; grandchildren, Michael E. Pool and his wife, Kristen, of Waco; Melissa Ross and her husband, Calvin, of Crawford; Rachel Pool of Dallas; four great-grandchildren, Nathan Pool, Jared Pool, Carlton Ross, and Caroline Ross.

Clara Mae Campbell died Nov. 4, 2003 in Garland. Graveside services were held at Jewett Cemetery in Jewett on Nov. 8. 

Mrs. Campbell was born in Hamilton on Oct. 30, 1918. 

She was preceded in death by her daughter Sue and husband Sam. 

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Roy and Yvone, Jimmy and Louise, Walter Lee, Carlos and Marcia, Frank and Jackie, Wayne and Cheryl and Charles; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Clifton, Janice Kaye, Theresa and Jim; 20 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and sisters Nora, Shirley and JoAnn.

Howard Campbell, 84, died Jan. 28 at Scott & White Hospital in Temple. Funeral services were held Jan. 30 at Stacy-Wilkins Chapel in Goldthwaite with Tom Loftin officiating. Burial was at Goldthwaite Memorial Cemetery. 

Mr. Campbell was born Aug. 31, 1915, the son of Charles Custer Campbell and Lucile Scott Campbell. 

He was married to Lee Ruth Graves on July 18, 1942 in San Marcos and lived most of his life in Mills County. 

He served in the Army Air Corps in World War II, worked for Campbell Butane Co. and was a Methodist. 

A daughter, Kay Harwood and a brother, Joe Milton Campbell, preceded him in death. 

Survivors include his wife, Lee Ruth Campbell of Goldthwaite; two sons and their wives, Cecil Campbell and his wife Beverly of San Antonio, Sam Campbell and his wife Kathy of Goldthwaite; two sisters, Joyce Padgett and Mary Louise Kay, both of Bakersfield, Calif.; two brothers, Scottie Campbell of De Leon and Cecil Campbell of Dublin; five grandchildren, Heather Harword and Charlie, Clark, Lucie and Mary Catherine Campbell.

CAMPBELL, NELLIE OREN (MOORHEAD)

Nellie Oren (Moorhead) Campbell, 99, died Aug. 6 at Hillside Nursing Center in Gatesville. Services were Monday, Aug. 9 at First Baptist Church in Evant with Rev. Arlie Fielding and Rev. Wade Lackey officiating. Burial was at Levita Cemetery. 

Mrs. Campbell was born Nov. 8, 1899 in Montgomery County near Conroe, the daughter of Robert A. and Mary Elizabeth Moorhead. When she was six, she moved to Coryell County where she lived the rest of her life. 

She was married to Allen George Campbell on Dec. 20, 1925. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Evant where she served as church clerk for more than 30 years. She was a Sunday School teacher and worked in many other areas of the church. She once quilted 52 quilts in a year. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her infant son, Marvin Earl; a grandson, Dale Pierot and two brothers, Guy and Newton Moorhead. 

Survivors include three daughters, Edna Marzell and her husband Carl Scribner of Dallas, Lila Sue and her husband Paul Neff of Bryon and Hilda Lurene and her husband William Witherspoon of Mesquite; her son, Rev. Ray Gordon Campbell and his wife Emilie of Belton; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. 

Pallbearers were Gus Orr, Damon Chumney, Louis Estill, William Witherspoon, Ray Meissner and Sidney Neff. Honorary pallbearers were Paul Neff Jr. and Carl M. Scribner.

CANTRELL, CAROLYN LOUISE (CANTRELL)

Carolyn Louise Cantrell died in Waco at Providence Hospital on Oct. 28, 2003. Funeral services were held Oct. 31 at Riley Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. John Farris officiating.


Mrs. Cantrell was born April 18, 1947 at Silver City, NM, the daughter of Edward and Vivian Taylor Hagan.

She was married to Ernest Cantrell on March 27, 1969 in Hamilton.
Mrs. Cantrell was a devoted and loving mother and grandmother. She was a Licensed Vocational Nurse, dedicated to serving the elderly in the nursing homes in Hamilton for more than 17 years.

Survivors include her six children, Duane Cantrell and Misty Cantrell, both of Brady, Sherry Musick of Stephenville, Tonya DeLeon, Lance Cantrell and Amber Cantrell, all of Hamilton; a sister, Shirley Mize of Membres, NM and her fiancé, Robert (Bobby) Berry of Hamilton.

CARLSON, DORIS ALIENE (MIESSNER)

Doris Aliene Meissner Carlson, 71, of Hamilton died her home Oct. 12, 2003. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. on Oct. 18 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Cranfills Gap. Mrs. Carlson was born Nov. 15, 1931 in Hamilton County, the daughter of Edd & Leonna Neie Meissner. 

She was married to C. G. Martin Carlson on March 18, 1950 at Cranfills Gap. She was a loving helpmate to her husband, a homemaker, a devoted and loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Hamilton. 

Survivors include her husband of Hamilton; five children, Maranna Horn of Stephenville, Donna Mize and her husband Wayne of Aeworth, Georgia, Ronnie Carlton of Midland, Sherry Evans and her husband Mike of Midland and Theresa Schulz and her husband Todd of Princeton survives her; 13 grand-children, eight great grandchildren and one sister Margie Boyd of Wellborn.

CARSON, CHARLES RAYMOND

Charles Raymond Carson, 76, of Sidney, died Tuesday, June 15 at his residence. 

Services were June 17 in the Higginbotham Funeral Chapel with Rev. Dennis Hester officiating. Burial was in the Toliver Cemetery in Comanche County under the direction of Higginbotham Funeral Home. 

Mr. Carson was born January 29, 1923, in Comanche County, the son of Tommy Mack and Ethel Thedford Carson. He was married to Velma Maynard on December 25, 1953, in Barksdale. They had lived near Sidney for the past 14 years. 

He was a shipping clerk for Love Envelopes. He was a Methodist. 

Survivors include his wife, Velma Carson, of Sidney; a daughter, Carolyn and husband Richard Gibson of May; a son, Billy Carson of Ducanville; five brothers, Marshal Carson of Hamilton; C. H. Carson of Richardson; Clinton Carson of Lufkin, Pete Carson and J. R. Carson, both of Lamkin; two sisters, Marie Gailley of Quinlin and Lucy Thedford of Gustine and four grandchildren.

CARTER, BILLY WESLEY

Billy Wesley Carter, 75, of Talihina, Okla., died Feb. 23 at his home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26 at the Talihina Baptist Church with Rev. Hollis Bond and Rev. Mark Cook officiating. Burial will follow at the Old Talihina Cemetery under the direction of Talihina Funeral Home.

He was born Aug. 13, 1927 in Atoka, Okla., the son of W. Thomas and Gertrude Clapp-Carter. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Talihina, where he has lived for the past 15 years.

Mr. Carter was an active Red Cross volunteer who served at the Pentagon after 9-11 and the Oklahoma City Bombing as well as serving in Guam, South Dakota, Houston and Galveston.

He held the highest position a civilian can obtain with the Red Cross. He was an accountant by trade and worked in Africa for 15 years for Shell Oil Company.

Mr. Carter was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mary Carter and a brother, Jerry Carter.

Survivors include three sons and a daughter-in-law, Billy D. and Deanna Carter, Randy Carter and Adam Carter; a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and James Pelton, all of Houston; a sister and brother-in-law, Nina and Rex Reynolds; a grandson, Josh; two nephews and one niece; one aunt, Ruth Garrett and a host of friends.

Geraldine Lane (Gerri) Cate, 71, of Dublin and Haltom City, died Monday, Aug. 24, at Medical Plaza in Fort Worth. Services were at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, at Harrell Memorial Chapel in Dublin with Rev. David Roberts officiating. Burial was to be in Bluebonnet Hills Cemetery in Colleyville at 11 a.m. Thursday with the pastor of Birdville Baptist Church officiating. 

Mrs. Cate was born Dec. 19, 1926, in Hamilton, the daughter of Davis M. and Lora Bell Archie Lane. She was married to James R. Cate on May 17, 1946, in Tarrant County. She was self-employed, serving as secretary/treasurer of Hardware Electric Supply Inc. in Haltom City. She was a member of First Baptist Church. 

Survivors include her husband, James R. Cate of Dublin and Haltom City; a son, David M. Cate of Garland; a daughter Jerry K. Cate Williams of Dublin; a sister, Melba Allsup of Dublin; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. 

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, Memphis, Tenn.

CAVETT, GERALDINE (MOORE)

Geraldine Cavett, 72, of Slaton, died Dec. 11, 2003 after an illness. Funeral services were held Dec. 13 at 10:30 a.m. in the Bible Baptist Church with Rev. Chris Downer, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Englewood Cemetery.


Mrs. Cavett was born Nov. 8, 1931 in Red River County. She moved to the Southland area and attended Southland schools. She was a member of the Bible Baptist Church and the church’s choir. She was a caregiver for children’s day-care before she retired in 1988.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ruffus and Lillian Moore and one brother, Little Robert.

Survivors include four sons, Morris L. of Cedar Hill, Tommy M. of Cleburne, Donald L. and Glen F., both of Hamilton; three daughters, Brenda Walsh and Judy Calhoun, both of Hamilton and Kimberly School of Shallowwater; 23 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; four brothers, Bobby Moore of Mineola, Kenneth Moore of Clarksville, Tenn., R.J. Moore of Midlothian and Billy Moore of Temple; seven sisters, Wanza Holler of Bakersfield, Calif., Maurine Luttrell of Lubbock; Betty Roland of Slaton, Edith Burrow of Irving, Elizabeth Ginn of Petehachapi, Calif; C.J. CHAMBLESS, VERNER WILLIAM

Verner William Chambless, 91 of Henderson died July 10, 2000 at Tyler Hospice Homeplace in Tyler. Services will be held Thursday, July 13 at Crawford - A. Crim Funeral Home Chapel in Henderson with Cy Stafford of Hattiesburg, Miss. and Everett Chambers of Fort Worth officiating. Burial will be at Rusk County Memorial Gardens. 

Mr. Chambless was born May 13, 1909 in Hamilton County, the son of George and Amanda Dehart Chambless. He was a member of the Henderson Church of Christ. 

He was the owner of Chambless Implement Sales Ford tractor dealership for 23 years before he and his wife, Lula retired in 1976. He was a resident of Henderson for 47 years. 

His first wife, Lula Lawson Chambless in 1986, preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, Ada Cowart Chambless; a son, Jimmie Chambless and his wife Joyce of Henderson; a daughter, Judy Sprott and husband Bill of Belton; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. 

Pallbearers will be Buster Postell, Bily Mills, David Duncan, Mike Cardwell, Phil Pirtle, John Horne, Bryan Rumbo and Ray Johnson.

CHAPMAN, CARL H. 

Carl H. Chapman, 61, died April 8, 2001 in the Republic of Panama. Memorial services will be held Saturday May 19 at 10 a.m. at Riley Funeral Home with Rev. Dean Reed officiating. He was born Sept. 19, 1939 the son of Mary and Ned Chapman. 

Mr. Chapman graduated from Hamilton High School in 1957 and received a Bachelor of Music degree from Texas Wesleyan College four years later. He received a Master of Arts degree in music education from Ohio State University in 1965. 

In 1966 he moved to the Panama Canal Zone to become music director at the Canal Zone College. He transferred to Curundu Junior High School in 1971 where he spent the remainder of his career as choral music director. He had taught music for the past 36 years. 

Among Mr. Chapman's numerous professional achievements was serving as guest conductor of the Panama Symphony Orchestra and in 1973 he was named the Canal Zone's outstanding teacher. He especially enjoyed keeping in touch with his many friends in Hamilton. Memorials may be made to the Hamilton Public Library. Riley Funeral Home

CHAPMAN, DAVID CLAUD

David Claud Chapman, 86, of Comanche died Friday, Nov. 27, in Comanche Community Hospital. 

Services were Sunday, Nov. 29, in the Hall and Sons Funeral Home in Comanche. Graveside services were Monday, Nov. 30, in the Rosco Cemetery in Rosco. 

Mr. Chapman was born Jan. 1, 1912, in Golden, the son of George Thomas and Kate Hibbits Chapman. He was married to Nena D. Lee on Nov. 4, 1932. He was a farmer in the Loraine area until his retirement in 1972. He had lived in Comanche since 1973. He was a Baptist. 

Survivors include his wife, Nena D. Chapman of Comanche; two daughters, Claudia Lanett Jones and husband Sam L. of Odessa and Linda Diann Scott and husband Robert E. of Hamilton, Miss.; three grandchildren, Marsha Ann Hortsman and husband Charley of Odessa, Tina Lynn Crawford and husband Garry of El Paso and David L. Scott and wife Kimberly of Hamilton, Miss.; two great-grandchildren; three nephews; and two nieces.


CLARK, HOLLICE ROBIN

Hollice Robin Clark, 76, of Odessa, was killed in a two-vehicle accident March 3 near Odessa. 

Services were March 6 at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church in Odessa under the direction of Wilson Funeral Home. 

Clark was the father of former Hamilton resident Christy Clark Wright, now of Junction, and the grandfather of David Wright of Hamilton and Sarena Wright of San Angelo.
 

 

CLEMONS, RONNIE

Ronnie Clemons 57, of Hamilton died at his residence Dec. 6, 2004. Funeral services will be Thursday Dec. 9, 2004 in the Riley Funeral Home Chapel with H.J. Billingsley officiating. 

He was born Feb. 6, 1947 at Hamilton, the son of Raymond Perry Clemons and Nelly Mae Bunnell Clemons and graduated from Hamilton High School in 1965. He attended two years at Sam Houston State University at Huntsville where he was on the Lowman Rifle Drill Team. He graduated from Tarleton State University, earning a bachelors degree. 

Mr. Clemons served his country in the Marine Corps, served as a scout master for 14 years where he was a member of The Order of The Arrow and received the District Award of Merit. He was a retired mail carrier. 

He served as a baseball coach and umpire and a soccer coach for the youth. He was a member of the Texas Indian Hobbest Association and a member of the Methodist Church. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and one son Michael Lee Clemons. 

Survivors include his four children, Raymond Scott Clemons of Houston, Christopher Wayne Clemons of Little Elm, ReGina Marcott and Christopher RedElk both of Waco; three sisters, Mary Jo Cox of Watauga, Ava Riley of Hamilton and Phyllis Billingsley of Temple; 11 grandchildren, Christopher, Christian, Branden, Ryen, Zachary, Cheyeene, Hunter, Mikan, Dillon, Brandon and Nathan.

Margaret E. Clutter, a lifelong resident of Kansas City and Independence area, died March 9 at the Hamilton General Hospital. Services were held March 14 at Mt. Washington Forever Cemetery in Independence, Mo. 

She was born Feb. 19, 1915 at Lawton, Kan., the daughter of Roma Butler and Hattie Swoveland Butler. She was married to Guy D. Clutter on Aug. 23, 1943. He preceded her in death on Jan. 11, 1970. 

During WWII she worked at Lake City Arsenal. She worked in the Kansas City garment industry for 47 years and prior to moving to Texas she worked at McDonalds on Highway 24 for ten years. Mrs. Clutter was an active member of VFW Post 1000 Women’s Auxiliary, Women’s DAV Auxiliary, Fraternal Order Eagles, Tops and Blue Ridge Assembly of God. 

She had many friends and was sad to leave them at the age of 88 to move to Texas to be close to her family. Arriving in Texas she made many new friends at Forrest Ridge Care Center. 

During her stay she helped with activities, assisted with nursing home patients and always had a smile for everyone. She loved to be with her family and especially enjoyed going fishing. She thought everyone should fish, no mater what their age. 

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, five brothers, three sisters, two nephews and a niece.

COHEN, ANNETTE HILLMAN

Annette Hillman Cohen, 61, died Feb. 15. Services were Feb. 21 at the First Presbyterian Church in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

She was born Feb. 26, 1938 in Pittsburgh, Penn. She graduated from Lamar High School in Houston in 1956 and received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Houston in 1962.

She had lived in Santa Fe, NM since 1971 where she was a business owner and teacher. She completed her Master's Degree in counseling at the University of New Mexico in 1985.

Mrs. Cohen was an artist, educator, traveler, mother and friend. She has traveled in Europe and Central America where she studied Spanish and taught enrichment classes, incorporating her travels and artistic talents into lesson plans. A group of her students were honored to show their artwork at the Georgia O'Keefe Museum.

Survivors include her companion, Wendell Quinn; her children, Ana and Seth and his fiancée Georgina Lippiatt; her sister Bunny Williams and husband Seth of Hamilton; a niece, Denise Gillespie and husband Doug and their son Seth Ryan of Hamilton; her brother Rody Glen Hillman II of Houston; two nephews, Rody Glenn III and Fred Elbin; her friend and father to their children, Herb Cohen of Santa Fe and numerous other lifelong friends and former students in Houston and Santa Fe.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions or donations may be made to the Santa Fe Girls School for the Annette Cohen Memorial Arts Program (a 501C3 non-profit organization) 331 Buena Vista, Santa Fe, NM 87501.

COLE, ROBERT IRVIN

Robert Irvin Cole, 75, died Jan. 29 in a Lubbock hospital. Funeral services were held Feb. 2 in the First United Methodist Church in Petersburg. Burial was in the Petersburg Cemetery. 

Mr. Cole was born Feb. 13, 1924, the son of Aubrey Ray and Willie Mae Grisham Cole in Hamilton County. He married Tommye Jo Day on Nov. 2, 1942 in Clovis, NM. She preceded him in death on July 26, 1999. 

He moved to Petersburg in 1947 where he was a farmer and a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite, York Rite, Petersburg Lions Club and was a Shriner. 

He served in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of World War II. He was a Boy Scout leader a former city councilman in Petersburg and member of the First United Methodist Church. 

Mr. Cole is preceded in death by his wife; his parents and his brothers, Aubrey Carroll Cole and Lee Virgil Cole. 

Survivors include two sons, Dr. Sterley Bob Cole of State College, Pa., and Dayvid Lowry Cole of Lubbock; a sister, Alma Louise Bagley of Longview and seven grandchildren. 

The family has requested memorials be made to Petersburg EMS.

PETERSBURG (Special) Services for R. I. Cole, 75, of Petersburg will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Sharon O'Quinn officiating. 

Burial will be in Petersburg Cemetery under the direction of Lemons Funeral Home. 

He died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, at Covenant Medical Center.

COLVIN, LENORA FAYE (WILIE)

Lenora Faye Colvin, 60, died Saturday, Jan. 16, at her home in Gatesville. 

Services were Tuesday, Jan. 19, at First Baptist Church in Evant with Rev. Cary Hilliard officiating. Burial was in Hines Chapel Cemetery in Lampasas County under the direction of Evant Funeral Home. 

Mrs. Colvin was born May 13, 1938, in Lampasas County, the daughter of Walter Darrell and Lorene Wilson Wilie. She had lived most of her life in Gatesville, Coryell County. She was a homemaker and a Baptist. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; four children, JacQuline Maria Farley, Thana Lorene Farley, Gilbert Darrell Colvin and Kahana Taire Colvin; and a sister, Robbie Fern Modglin. 

Survivors include five children, Janice Lynn Williford and Tahana Kaire Barcuch, both of Gatesville, Sarah Jean Reyes of Palestine, Jovan Hope Colvin of Bossier City, La., and Lori Michaele St. John of Waco; a sister, Charollette Ann Karnes; and five brothers, Dennis, D. Wilie, Terry L. Wilie, Eldon W. Wilie, Curtis L. Wilie and John W. Wilie. 

Pallbearers were Leslie Dean Cox, Eliazar Ty Reyes, Johnny Patterson, Rick Caldwell, Lee Schineldecker and Jessie Wilie.

COMMINS, JAMES ELON

James Elon Commins Sr, 66 of Onalaska and Hamilton died Sept. 16 at Kindred Hospital Houston NW in Houston. 

A memorial service was held Sept. 19 at Cochran Funeral Home Chapel in Onalaska with Rev. Ken Adkins conducting the service. Mr. Commins was born Dec. 14, 1936 in Kilgore, the son of Ernest and Frances Kennedy Commins. 

He was a retired truck driver. Mr. Commins attended Grace Pentecostal Church when he lived in Hamilton. 

He is preceded in death by his father, Ernest Elon Commins; his grandmother, Lily and grandson, Devon Commins and two nephews.. Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Lori Commins of Hamilton; mother, Frances Commins of Mt. Enterprise; son, James Commins II of Onalaska; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Pam and Greg Rader of Oklahoma, Jamie Godfrey of Brownwood and Jean and Rusty Flack of Hamilton; five grandchildren, three brothers, Roland of Arkansas, Paul of Longview and Darrell of Kilgore; four sisters, Janet Barnes of Texarkana, Cricket-Robinson of Henderson, Amanda Haynes and Becky Ross of Mt. Enterprise; numerous nieces, nephews and friends. It has been requested in lieu of flowers, all donations be made to his wife to help pay for cremation.

Burnard Lee Conner, 61 of Fort Worth, died Aug. 22, 2003. Funeral services will be held Aug. 28 at Winn-Scott Funeral Home in Benbrook. 

He was preceded in death by Hazel Conner and E.J. Conner. 

Survivors include his mother, Willie Conner of Gatesville and four children, Kelly Lee Andrass and family of Mineral Wells, Twila Lee Williams and Family of Belton, Randol Lee Conner and family of Hamilton and Lee Conner and family of Fort Worth as well as 12 grandchildren.

Charline Whitt Conner 76, of Bee House died May 4, 2003, in Lampasas. Funeral services were held May 6 at the Evant Church of Christ in Evant, Edward Schuab officiating, with interment following in the Bee House Cemetery. 

Charline was born December 14, 1926, at Pearl, the daughter of Charlie Emmitt & Eula Mae Whitt Cox. 

On November 4, 1944, at Bee House she was united in marriage to Glenn Ross Conner. During World War II, she worked at Fort Hood in civil service. For a number of years, she was a secretary for the propane company. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great- grand-mother. She was a member of the Pearl Church of Christ. 

Survivors include her husband Glenn Conner of Bee House; three daughters, Glenda Ruth Fuqua of Lubbock, Sandra Kay Conner of Corpus Christi and Frances Mae Conner of Copperas Cove; three grandchildren, Jennifer Lloyd, Russell Anderson and Jessica Jones; and one great-grandchild Conner Lloyd. 

One infant son, Charles Glenn Conner, and her parents precede her in death. Pallbearers were Richard Conner, Ross Conner, Bill Conner, Randy Conner, Tony Conner and Royce Conner.

Claudia Stewart Cook died Sunday, March 28. Funeral services were held Thursday, April 1 at Lackland Baptist Church with Dr. Gordon J. Malkowski officiating. Burial was at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with Porter Loring in charge of arrangements. 

Mrs. Cook was born Dec. 1, 1926 to George Truitt and Veda Mae Cole Stewart in Martin County, Texas. She lived all of her early life in Lamkin and Hamilton County. For many years she owned and operated her own professional Modeling Studios and Agency. Though married to two Air Force Officers, she continued her own professional career until her last husband's death. 

Mrs. Cook had been in the real estate business since 1980. 

She was preceded in death by husbands Clarence Craig, Frank Turner, and James Dick Cook; and one sister, Cathryn Lee Marshal. 

She is survived by four sons, James Craig of Austin, Kenneth Lloyd Cook of Houston, David Frank Cook of Oklahoma City, OK, and Dick Cook of San Antonio; two sisters, Betty Jo Horton and George Mae Woods both of Brownwood; ten grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. 

[Claudia was a granddaughter of John Harum Cole and Lillian Maude Sparks.]

COOK, GERTRUDE SARAH ANN (BROWN)

Gertrude Sarah Ann Brown, second child and first daughter of Joseph V. and Nancy (Bullard) Brown was born on March 12, 1905 at Blue Ridge community, Hamilton County, Texas. Gertrude was a lady of medium stature with brown hair and blue eyes. She attended Blue Ridge Schools, but graduated from Lillian High School (Tarrant County) in 1923 where she received a scholarship to Grubb's Vocational School, early forerunner of the University of Texas at Arlington. The family moved and since Lillian schools only had eleven grades, Gertrude attended Mansfield High School and graduated again from the twelfth grade in 1924. After High School, Gertrude worked for the telephone company in Amarillo, Texas. On June 12, 1937, she married William Gerrard Cook, a good-looking fellow of Dutch heritage, in Ft. Worth. A daughter and son were born of the union. Gertrude was very health conscious and worked at a health food store after her children were in school. She was skilled at cooking, and sewing and her landscape flower gardens were always beautiful. She and her husband lived in Tucson, Arizona, then Nederland, San Marcos, and Austin, before settling in Arlington, Texas about 1952. Gertrude was a Baptist, but became a Jehovah Witness sometime in the 1960's while retaining many of her Baptist beliefs. She died on March 29, 1997 and is buried in Laurel Land Cemetery in Ft. Worth.

Howard Wayne Copp, 61, of Evant, died Thursday, May 14, at Scott & White Hospital in Temple after a short illness. 

Services were Saturday, May 16, at Evant Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Gene Tyson officiating. Graveside services were held Tuesday, May 19, in Brewster Cemetery in Brewster, Neb., under the direction of Hoch Funeral Home. 

Mr. Copp was born June 3, 1936, in Custer County, Neb., the son of Howard Wayne and Zelma Warwick Copp. He had lived in Evant 3½ years, moving from Ainsworth. He was a heavy equipment operator and worked in construction. He was married to Edna Anderson on Dec. 13, 1987, at Ainsworth. He was a veteran and a member of First Presbyterian Church in Adamsville. 

Survivors include his wife, Edna Anderson Copp of Evant; a son, Lewis Wayne Copp and wife Tobie of Sidney, Neb.; a stepson, Joseph Gildea and wife Cherie of Dripping Springs; his former wife, Mary Hanley; a sister, Wanda Daniels and husband Loren of Ainswoth; and two brothers, Gary Copp of Dunning, Neb., and Gayle Copp of Minnesota.

COSPER, NORA OPAL (SHAFFER)

Nora Opal Cosper, 88, formerly of Killeen, died June 20. Funeral services were held June 24 at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home with Willard Jack Dunn officiating. Burial was at Live Oak Cemetery in Youngsport. 

She was born April 4, 1916 in Killeen, the daughter of Bur-ton and Victoria Shafer. She was married to Andrew Cosper in 1930. She worked for Dr. Burow at Burow Clinic and hospital for 22 years. She moved to Hamilton in 1987. 

She was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers, Raymond Shafer and Weldon Shafer. 

Survivors include a son, H.C. Cosper and wife Patsy of Florence; a daughter, Shirley DeLoach and husband Gene of Hamilton; five grandchildren, Michele Cathey, Michael DeLoach and Mark DeLoach, all of Hamilton; Heath Cosper and Norei Cosper of Rockwall and eight great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Cecil Lynn Cosper, Sidney Cosper, Dan Cosper, Wayne Cosper, Harold Cosper and Kenneth Cosper, all nephews of Mrs. Cosper.

COURTION, MYRTIS (MITTEL)

Myrtis Mittel Courtion, 92, died on Dec. 28, 2004, having lived the past seven years in Myrtlewood Estates and Re-gency House in San Angelo. Funeral services will be held at Johnson's Funeral Home in San Angelo at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 30. Burial will be held at 12:15 p.m. at the Sonora Cemetery. 

Mrs. Courtion was born on Nov. 28, 1912, in Union Parish, LA, and as a young girl, moved with her family to San Angelo. After graduating high school, she worked for the Tom Green County Treasurer. She was married to Ben F. Mittel, a rancher in Sutton County, in 1931. He preceded her in death in 1971. 


During her 20 years in Coryell County, Myrtis owned and operated a general merchandise store in Evant. While living there, she served her community and her church with her love for music as a pianist and organist. 

Myrtis was a member of College Hills Baptist Church in San Angelo and will be lovingly remembered for her service in the community to the family shelter, Shannon Memorial Hospital, the Literary Council and homebound ministries. 


In 1972, she moved back to San Angelo to join her family. She later married Dr. Charles E. Courtion, a long-time resident of San Angelo. He preceded her in death in 1979. Survivors include 2 daughters, Marilyn Mangum and husband Charles of Austin and Melinda Jordan and husband Jerry of San Antonio; a son, Ben R. Mittel and wife Peggy of Gatesville; a step-daughter, Mary Helen Courtion of Kereville; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

COWDEN, GARY EDGAR "IKE"

Guy (Ike) Edgar Cowden died August 21, 2003 at his residence in Lamkin. Following cremation, a memorial service will be held in Portland, Texas. 

Mr. Cowden was born on November 2, 1927 in Round Rock, the son of Minnie Dee Ratliff and Guy Heather Cowden. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane in 1969. 

He joined the US Navy on December 21, 1945 as seaman 1st Class. He served 10 years before being honorably discharged on July 25, 1955. Following his military service, Mr. Cowden became a merchant marine until 1975 when he came to Lamkin to care for his sick mother. Ranch work and restaurant cooking occupied his time until he retired in 
1987. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Walter Cowden and Howard Cowden and a sister Jane Immicke. 

Survivors include his loving companion, Linda Jean Cowden; two sons, Gilbert Cowden and Gary Cowden, both of Comanche; daughter, Rose Smith of Portland; a sister, Mary Phillips of Comanche; three grandchildren and nine great- grandchildren.

Lena Otella Cox, 89, died Saturday, Oct. 17, at Golden Age Manor Nursing Home in Dublin. 

Services were Monday, Oct. 19, at Harrell Memorial Chapel. Burial was in Erath Gardens of Memory. 

Mrs. Cox was born May 18, 1909, in Comanche County, the daughter of Tobe (Bud) and Lena Mae Flanigan Wilson. She was married to Lender Clifton Cox on Dec. 15, 1929, in Comanche. She was a homemaker and a member of the Board Baptist Church. 

Survivors include her husband, Lender C. Cox of Dublin; three daughters, Wanda Ogle of Weatherford, Lula Mae Gibson of Stephenville and Sheryl Schwartz of Garland; a sister, Erma Nelson of Brownwood; a brother, Tom Wilson of Comanche; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. 

Pallbearers were Glenn Crooks Jr., Chris Taskey, Bobby Mask, Tommy Cole and Bill Cole. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society.

CRAIN, HUBERT WILLIAM, REV.

Reverend Hubert W. Crain, 82, of Hamilton, died Sunday, Oct. 15, at his home following a brief illness.

Services were at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, at the First United Methodist Church in Stephenville, the Rev. Eric McKinney officiating.

Rev. Crain was born in Waco, October 3, 1906.  He attended Waco schools and graduated from Baylor University.  He attended seminary at Southern Methodist University and began his ministry in 1931.  Rev. Crain was formerly a minister at Gatesville, Temple, Fort Worth, Ferris, Rock Church and other Central Texas churches.  At the time of his death he was pastor at Bethel (United Methodist Church) near Hamilton.

On September 23, 1984, he married Alice (Adcock) Coston, who survives him in Hamilton.  Also surviving are three children, Hubert Atandlee Crain of Waco, Alice Elaine Abel, of Fort Worth, and Evelyn Fay Bosworth of DeMoines, Iowa; three step-children, Raymond E. Coston of Temple, Roger B. Coston of El Paso and Frances W. Coston of Hamilton; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and four step-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one grandchild, two sisters, and one brother.

Pallbearers were Michael Crain, Mel Bosworth, Steve Coston, Danny McCray, Mickey Hunt, and Gene Hoherz.  Honorary pallbearers were Lee Shudde Crain, Stan Prestweich, John Dobson, W. R. Coston, Erwin Voges, Earl Loewe, Odie Ebeling, Robert Ebeling, and James Kruse.

Burial was in the West End Cemetery in Stephenville.

Hubert William Crain married first Alice Evelyn Hays.

Hubert William Crain was a son of Joel N. Crain and Nettie (Alexander) Crain.

Joel N. Crain was a son of William Hampton Crain and Frances P. (Mitchell) Crain.

William Hampton Crain  was a son of Maj. Joel Burditt Crain and Sarah Elvina (Smith) Crain. 

Maj. Joel Burditt Crain was a son of Ambrose Hulon Crain, Sr.  and Mildred Mary "Polly" (Burditt) Crain.   Sarah Elvina (Smith) Crain was a daughter of Gen. James Smith and Hannah (Parker) Smith.

Ambrose Hulon Crain, Sr. was a son of Joel  and Rachel Crain.

Joel Crain was a son of Ambrose Crain and Elizabeth (Head) Crain.

 

CRANE, SYLVIA ANN (STOCKWELL)

Sylvia Ann Crane, 69, died after a courageous battle with lung disease on July 12, 2004. At her request, a private family service will be held later. 

She was born Oct. 30, 1935 in Alvarado. She graduated from Alvarado High School and attended Texas Wesleyan College. She went to work for Southwestern Bell and retired as a supervisor after 28 years of service. 

She was extremely outgoing, knew no strangers, loved to entertain guests and was a great cook. She was an avid reader, a master of crossword puzzles and enjoyed playing a variety of games. While living in Hamilton, she did volunteer work for United Care and the Public Library. Her residences have included St. Louis, Houston, Santa Fe, New Mexico, Arlington, Hamilton and Cleburne. 

Perhaps the greatest gift she left her children was the obvious love and devotion she had for her husband, Joe. She had a great passion for her friends, family and especially her grandchildren. Words are inadequate to express how much she will be missed. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar “Lefty” Sockwell and Ruth Sockwell. 

Survivors include her husband, Joe Crane, who faithfully and unselfishly gave his time in constant care of his soulmate; daughters and sons-in-law, Christy and Danny Thacker, Helen and Pat Gibson and Cathy Harmon; grandchildren, Bryan and Lauren Thacker, Patrick, Michael and Jennifer Gibson and Scott Harmon; brother Don Sockwell of Huntsville; sister, Catherine Gilbert of Las Vegas, Nev.; a number of nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews and a little dog named Pearl.

CRAWFORD, ORAN N.

Oran N. Crawford of Grand Prairie died in his home on July 10, 2000. Services will be held Thursday, July 13 at Freetown Road Church of Christ in Grand Prairie. Burial will be in Moore Memorial Gardens, Arlington. 

Mr. Crawford was born July 18, 1920 in Hamilton County. He was a longtime resident of Grand Prairie and worked as a toolmaker at Vought Aircraft Company for 27 years, retiring in 1976. 

He was a member of the Freetown Road Church of Christ and a member of their V.I.P. group. He was also a member of the A.A.R.P. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. 

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Edna Crawford of Grand Prairie; two sons, Danny Crawford of Houston and Marvin Crawford of Arlington; a daughter, Jean Barnes of Oklahoma; four grandchildren, Beverly White and John McCann, both of Grand Prairie, Jeff Crawford of Sugarland and Kayla Barnes of Oklahoma.

CROKER, NEVA (REED)

Neva Croker, 94, of Comanche died Dec. 7, 2004 at Comanche County Consolidated Hospital. Funeral services were held Dec. 11 in the Hall and Sons Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. John Boone officiating. Burial was in the Indian Creek Cemetery east of Co-manche. 

She was born July 2, 1910 in Comanche, the daughter of Felix Reed and Sallie Jane Franklin Reed. She was married to Charles Wesley Croker on Feb. 12, 1925. He preceded her in death in 1983. Mrs. Croker was a homemaker and a member of the First United Pentecostal Church in Comanche. 

Survivors include a daughter, Shirley Ann Cottrell and husband Travis of Ft. Stockton; two sons, Jack Croker and wife Vessie of Wink and Charles Croker and wife LaVerne of Hamilton; a daughter-in-law, Gladys Croker of Comanche, 15 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. 

She was preceded in death by her husband and a son, Kenneth Croker on Dec. 5, 2002.

CULP, MITCHELL

Mitchell Culp, 40, of Dennis died Thursday, Nov. 5, in a Fort Worth hospital. 

Services were Saturday, Nov. 7, at First Baptist Church in Gatesville with Rev. Larry Maddox and Rev. Samuel Crosby officiating. Burial was in Weaver Chapel Cemetery. 

Mr. Culp was born Oct. 6, 1958, in Fort Worth, the son of Joe T. and Juanice Ross Culp. He attended school in Hamilton and graduated from Granbury High School. He was married to Teresa Davis of Gatesville on Dec. 21, 1991. He worked as a construction inspection supervisor in the engineering department for the City of Fort Worth. He was a member of First Baptist Church. 

Survivors include his wife, Teresa Culp of Dennis; two daughters, Jacy Culp of Granbury and Michell Culp of Dennis; four sons, Kyle Culp, Troy Culp, Caleb Culp and Ross Culp, all of Dennis; his parents, Joe and Juanice Culp of Hico; two sisters, Tanya Luker and Debra Culp, both of Granbury; and a brother, Michael Culp of Granbury. 

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Dennis.
