THE ASSASSINATION OF MR. SNELL
(Occurred at First or Second Crossing down on Pecan
Creek)
Mr. Williams said that after Mr. Snell was
killed the tracks of two horses were found at the sumac. It appeared that
one man had waited in the sumac which were still there the last I knew)
while the other lay in wait, and did the deed. This was supposed to have
been a young fellow named Champman, and a man named Bogan, who was soon
after killed by Frank Cockrill. Crockett
Hendricks had something against Mr. Snell was right after him for
years.
(Seems to be a page or two missing.)
Old man Witcher lived near the present lake,
in a draw before you get to the present house out there. Isaac Steen
(the old county clerk [from 1865 to 1869])
lived there later. Mr. Williams did not know just who James Witcher was,
who got a patent to 160 acres that lies across the present Highway 36
(near places of Otto Rea and William Watson.
The old Messer house was a little way east of the lake road, quarter of
a mile or so up it, near the present two-story house.
