MR. C. W. RUTHERFORD
AND GEN. ROBERT E. LEE

Rutherford was highly educated, but didn’t take much interest in the law. He was educated at Washington University (later Washington and Lee) in Virginia. He was always a gambling and lively sort of fellow and he did something that caused him to have to report to General Robert E. Lee in his office. (This office is maintained just as he left it) General Lee was President of the University. He talked to Rutherford a long time in a kindly, soft-spoken, and fatherly way. Said, "I see you are from Texas, and told him he had known many Texas boys, knew how they were, and had always liked them. Finally, when discharged, probably rustled some papers, the General said, "By the way, Rutherford, I believe, you are charged with a minor infraction of one of our rules. I trust you won’t let that happen again." Rutherford told him that he surely would not and fairly worshiped him after that.
