LIST OF SHERIFFS
Mr. Williams got out a little book and ran through the list of sheriffs
but I can’t remember if all correctly with the dates. (Says see the
historical addition of The Hamilton County News. ) The daughter of
old Judge Osterhaut, of Belton, the noted Construction Day district judge,
had a daughter who married the son of G. W. Wade at Temple--step-mother of
Wilson Wade and the girls) Believe he said this was it was George W.
Wade.
Mr. Williams said he supported Bird for sheriff, who served one term,
and then Bob Shockley beat him, was elected.
Later Ramsey Moore was elected on the Populist ticket, and so was Tom
McKinley later and then the latter was beaten by T. P. (Press) Kinsey,
who was a democrat.
(It was feared by some that Bob Shockley, as sheriff, would not stand
up for law and order when Ault Ferguson was tried, but that he did. One
time in Breckenridge with my father in the old days, a man with a black
moustache stepped out of a little shack, and he said, "Hello,
Ramsey!" That was the former sheriff.
Believe Mr. Williams said John Brown, of Blue Ridge community was a
deputy under Wade. (Head of the fine family out there, including three
doctor sons who my father said "was like an old Roman." Remember
with pleasure a night I spent out at their home, with my classmate, Waldo
Brown. Had a fine time.
Seems Sam Terry succeeded Dave Smith as sheriff about ‘80 and served
a good while.) Bird sheriff about 1890
