JIMMIE CARTER
[JAMES ATCHLEY CARTER]
Old Uncle Jimmie Carter was one of the early day appointed sheriffs,
that didn’t, of course, do much in the office.
(He had a fine farm on the Cow
House south toward Gatesville, near Ohio,
and an old ranch type house. In 1911 my father went out to write their
wills, got a two-horse livery team, and took me with him. I would not go
in to dinner, sat in the buggy, the horses ran away, but luckily stopped
at a rail fence. Remember we passed by the old Captain Stiles place, and Dead
Man’s Creek. So named because a dead man was found there. One of the
Chamblisses,
whose father preempted land on Blue
Ridge, told me this; a stranger came by and spent the night with them,
said the dead man was his brother, that he was going west to find the
killer, and he came back by said, "I found him."
(John Eidson told me that a man brought in a couple of dwarf horses not
as big as they have now, but such a sight that people came a long ways
just to see them.
