Mr. Williams did not know when the Rices first came. They first settled
lower down the river, then moved on up it from Grandma’s place. He
pointed this out on our trip down to that country. The Rices moved to town
early but he was not sure when. Seemed to think he lived in Hamilton
during the Civil War when he had the ranger company.
(The Crumbling old Rice residence now abandoned is just at the top of
the hill from Rice Avenue. [On the south side of
West Grogan Street.--Elreeta Weathers) This was build very
early. It stands [stood] true north and
south, and not N 19 E and S 71 W as nearly all surveys do in the county.)
James W. Rice was a good man. Claunch was a good man. And he had always
thought William Snell was a good one.
