SHERIFF TERRY
Sam Terry served till ‘86 [1886]. Mr. Williams was deputy the rest of
the time, even while he was deputy county clerk. Then Jim
Massie was elected, about ‘86 Gentry had been sheriff before Terry,
was re-elected but did not qualify. He controlled everything, and Terry
was appointed in ’82. [1882][Sam
D. Terry was sheriff from 1884-1886. George N. Gentry was sheriff from
1878--1884. James W. Massie was sheriff from 1886-1890.--Elreeta Weathers] Later
Gentry ran against Massie and was defeated.
(The "Blue Ridge"
bunch seemed to have gained ascendency over the "River Bunch.")
(Eli Terry, the well-known contractor, was a brother to Sheriff Sam
Terry. Along about the time of our conversations, a daughter of Mr. Eli
Terry wrote from El Paso to the Hamilton paper. Should try to find it. I
believe her name was Mrs. Connison, or something like that. She wrote a
novel, said to have been based on Hamilton in which Old Doctor Perry and
others could be recognized. I never knew the title of the book and never
saw a copy of it.)
