Old man Hambright was accidentally killed by his brother-in-law Pink or
the other Dooley. hey had gone duck hunting in the Basin (on the Leon
River) and Dooley had a squirrel rifle which accidentally discharged and
killed him. That he himself had never seen the Old Man Hambright. He was
appointed sheriff and served a short time. He bought his land from Adam
Witcher, he said, or from the same party. (The old abstract supports
this, what you might call the Mabright corner of the northwest part of the
Gregg Survey just south of Hamilton. He was the father of Sam and Fred
Hambright, frontier characters.)
This Dooley was different from the Dooley who was a freighter and who
was a brother-in-law to Jim Dempster. (Dooley with others migrated to
Ochiltree County with others from here. Can remember the family.) Mr.
Williams said he used to go out to the Hambrights and play with the boys.
That Matt Carter also married a Hambright. There were three Carter
brothers, Matt, Dahl, and Red. Mat had boys, cousins of Fred and Sam
Hambright, one named Jim, one Bud.
(On the same tract of land or nearby were the Dinkins family, and the
Dolloff family, related, I think. Mr. Sid Dinkins, I can remember walking
through the pastures and fields, was deputy sheriff under Sheriff T. P.
(Press) Kinsey, a noted officer in the late nineties. Part Indian, always
understood. His son Harry used to work out on the Main Ranch, became an
important man in the oil mill industry and was in New Orleans and used to
come back to Hamilton. Knew him pretty well.)
