One time when Grandma Pierson had the hotel on the corner, which she
took over January 1, 1876, she and others lost some chickens. Mr. Williams
went down on the river to investigate. He was carrying a deputy’s
commission at the time. Took a commission from Sam Terry in the fall of
‘83. [1883] And he thought he had one from
Gentry before that time. He did not get pay but got to carry a six
shooter, and would serve papers, and perform a few jobs as deputy.
That he went down to the camp of Sam
Hambright, and probably Jim
Carter’s, where he located the chickens and also found a beef that
had just been butchered. And knowing that they were not in the cattle
business, he dug up the head and the hide. One or both of them probably
went tot he penitentiary for it. Sam always thought a good deal of Mr.
Williams, and named a boy after him. Rough they were, but pretty likeable
boys.
