WHEN DAVE KEMP KILLED SMITH

That Gentry was sheriff when Dave Kemp killed Smith. (I had thought it was G. W. Wade. He was sheriff from ‘79 [1879] for four years. George Wade had filled out Smith’s term. Think he said Smith served in ‘77 [1877] and died in ‘78 [1878] (May not have remembered this right) Mr. Williams said he saw and heard the commotion at the time of the shooting but did not know it was Kemp 'till Old Man Ross was leading him to the courthouse and Gentry and Uncle Tom Pierson, probably his deputy at the time, walked out and met them and took charge. That Kemp was very pale and had a red handkerchief around his neck. (So it was very early in the eighties, Gentry he said went out of office in ‘82 [1882]
