That Gentry was sheriff when Dave Kemp killed Smith. (I had thought it
was G. W. Wade. He was sheriff from ‘79 [1879] for four years. George
Wade had filled out Smith’s term. Think he said Smith served in ‘77
[1877] and died in ‘78 [1878] (May not have remembered this right) Mr.
Williams said he saw and heard the commotion at the time of the shooting
but did not know it was Kemp 'till Old Man Ross was leading him to the
courthouse and Gentry and Uncle Tom Pierson, probably his deputy at the
time, walked out and met them and took charge. That Kemp was very pale and
had a red handkerchief around his neck. (So it was very early in the
