On one occasion Mr. Williams said he was going down to Lampasas on a
mission for Judge Eidson. He stopped at the store down at Langford’s
Cove, just south of present Evant down the branch; stopped to warm, it
being a cold day. Old Man Asa Langford and a bunch of fellows were sitting
around. The Old Man went out to Mr. Williams’ horse and asked a lot of
questions. They looked like a pretty tough bunch. He went on and spent the
night with an acquaintance further on down the road. (The supposition was
likely that they suspected him of stealing the horse, a very serious
matter in those days.
