Hamilton is fortunate in having one of the best equipped and up-to-date
hotels of any small town in the state.
Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Atkinson, owners and operators of the hotel have
spent the greater part of their lives in the hotel business. Through their
wide and thorough experience they have learned what their patrons expect
and want and they strive to anticipate their wishes.
Mr. and Mrs. Atkinson’s first venture into serving the public was in
the old Stidham home in the west part of town. They converted it into a
small hotel and served the traveling public so well that it soon became
necessary for them to move to larger quarters. They moved to the old
Collier Hotel, which was more accessible and roomier, on the first day of
October, 1909, and on the thirteenth of October the building burned and
they lost practically everything they possessed. They then kept a private
boarding house until the Collier hotel was rebuilt. Then they established
the Atkinson in the old Ernest Williams home. As their business increased
they had to move to a larger hotel of their own, the one they occupy at
present. They have built up an attractive and superior small hotel
patronage, of which any hotel could well be proud. The hotel consists of
30 bedrooms which are equipped with hot and cold water, Sealy mattresses,
airy rooms, and all modern conveniences.
The personal supervision, by both Mr. and Mrs. Atkinson, of the kitchen
and dining room, has developed a diners patronage unequal to any other
establishment of its size in this section of the state. The hotel boasts
of its own fowl yard, garden and fruit trees. The meals are tempting to
the fastidious and to the ravenous travelers and diner-out.
The hotel is on a lot well-shaded by trees. Vines, flowers, and hedges
make the popular hotel appear as a commodious and beautifully kept home.
There are few hotels that with the blooming of the red and white oleanders
that are in the tubs placed between the boundary line trees, the
establishment looks more like a bit of the far south than mid-Texas.
Mrs. Atkinson is a daughter of Rev. J. Toland of Jonesboro. She is a
descendant of the noted Bullock family of South Carolina which has
produced a number of statesmen and one President of the country.
Mr. Atkinson is the son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Atkinson, pioneers of
Hamilton.
The Historical and Trade Expansion Edition of the News suggest to its
readers that they notice the vast number of cars parked about the hotel at
mealtime. Such patronage and popularity must be deserved. Why not take
your meals regularly with the Atkinsons and enjoy real pleasure in good
food.
