REV. J. W. CAMPBELL
Rev. J. W. Campbell, pastor of the Presbyterian
Church,
was born in Mason County, Illinois, September 9, 1867. When but a small
boy his parents moved to Nebraska where he grew to young ,manhood amid
stirring frontier conditions. In May, 1888, he settled in Mississippi, and
for more than 46 years has been a citizen of the South, loyal to its
traditions.
He was impressed in 1889 that he should enter the
ministry, but having chosen the legal profession as his life work he tried
to avoid the "Call" for nine years. In 1898 he was licensed to
preach, and January 1, 1898, began his first pastorate. Preached 12 years
in Mississippi, 2 years in New Mexico, 1 year in California, and the rest
of his ministerial life (to date) in Texas. Began working in Hamilton July
1, 1922 and served 41 months; was then called to Mart, Texas, where he
served 6 years. One of the crowning results of his labors at Mart was the
erection of a beautiful Church building and dedicating it free of debt in
1931 in spite of the deadening effects of the depression then being felt.
Failing in health he resigned his work at Mart and moved
to Kerrville and rested 12 months. Again feeling justified in trying to
return to his loved employ he served as a "Supply" at Llano,
Texas six months; and Then on call of the Session of the Hamilton
congregation he returned here June 1, 1933. During the time he has served
Hamilton Presbyterians, 71 names have been added to the roll of
membership.
