[& JOHN JEFFERSON DURHAM]
_____
Mr. and Mrs. Will C. Moore, proprietors of the Moore
Cafe are among the honored pioneers of this generation of Hamilton
citizens.
William Moore, father of Mr. Moore was born in Arkansas
and his mother, Sallie (Smith) Moore, was a Mississippian. These two young
pioneers met and married in Texas and came to Hamilton to enter the sheep
raising industry. They raised a family of several sons and one daughter.
Mrs. Moore, formerly Miss Melvia Durham, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. J. J. Durham, who were well-known among the foremost pioneers of
the early history of this county. They were here when some of the most
daring Indian raids were perpetrated. Mr. Durham aided in protecting the
settlements from their depredations. He was also probably the first school
teacher in the town, teaching his few pupils under the shade of the trees
in the summer. He was also one of the most extensive land owners at any
time in the history of the county. In the later period of his life he
entered the mercantile business and followed that until the time of his
death. He and his wife were among the foremost citizens of the county and
their career in Hamilton is sacred memory to the old timers and their
children.
After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Moore followed
farming and ranching. At present they own the Moore Care and give a
splendid service to the public in both general and short order needs.
