Rufus P. Rice was born about 12 miles east of Hamilton in 1856, before the organization of Hamilton county or the location of the town, on the headright of his grandfather, surveyed in 1839, and is the county’s oldest native citizen.

Most of his early life was spent in the cattle business and he accompanied his father’s herds to Shreveport and Oklahoma. In 1879 he established a ranch in what is now Fisher county on the site of the present town of Roby.

He was married to Martha Shockley who died in 1904, their children being as follows: P. M. Rice, L. N. Rice, Bessie Rice, Edith and Margaret Rice.

He had little educational advantages, altogether his schooling amounted to not over 18 months, but he had an aptitude for office work and has held various public positions. He was District Clerk for four years, from 1906-1907.
