PECAN SCHOOL, NO. 18
1880-aft. 1936
The Pecan School and
community five miles northeast of Hamilton derived its name from
its location on Pecan Creek near Hamilton. The first
Pecan
School was built in 1880 near Dave Snell’s place. This school
was located in the same community school district as had been the private Leon
River School in which Miss Ann
Whitney died in 1867. An early teacher was Dr.
C. C. Baker, who rode horseback each day to school from Hamilton.
Other early teachers were C. C. Powell, Mrs. T. B. Cooper, and Mrs. Pet
Curry. There were seven grades in Pecan School
in 1911. Before 1933 the school had been moved to a location near Durham’s
bridge. In 1924-25 Miss Virginia Kern was the teacher for this
school. M. C. Anderson, J. L. Johnson, and Clarence Clark
were on the school board. In 1936 Miss Lucille Anderson was
principal and Miss Lillian Cates was a teacher.
Other teachers have included: Lucille
Eloise (Anderson) Brummett
