W. T. SAXON --1897
[ CAPT. WALTER TERRY SAXON]
April 20, 1836, just one day before the Battle of San Jacinto, W. T.
Saxon was born in Autauga County, South Carolina. In 1854 he moved to
Florida, later attended the Southern Military Institute at Fredonia,
Alabama, and took a course in civil engineering. When the Civil War broke
out, he raised one of the first companies in Florida, of which he was
chosen captain. He saw active service in the war, was wounded five times,
and was a prisoner twice. He was promoted to the rank of major. After the
war he was twice elected to the legislature, and then came to Hamilton in
1874 where he engaged in surveying. He was elected county surveyor in 1878
and was still in that office in 1897. It is said that he knew more about
boundaries and surveys in this county than any other man.
A daughter of Capt. Saxon, Mrs. Bessie Camp, still lives here. His son,
Troop, lives in Oklahoma, and his grandson, Terry, lives in Hamilton.
