William B. BUCHANAN Sr. born around 1791 in South Carolina. He married Permelia "Milly" ARNOLD. He died September 27, 1855, in Concordia Parish, Louisiana. Milly died 3 days later. There is a will on file in the Abbeville District of South Carolina, administered February 15, 1856, by his brother-in-law, Francis ARNOLD. In the 1850 Census, William & family are enumerated in South Carolina as follows;
Saluda Regiment, Abbeville District, South Carolina

William BUCHANAN Sr. 59 M W farmer SC
Milly BUCHANAN 58 F W SC
James BUCHANAN 28 M W wheelwright SC

other children:

Belinda BUCHANAN 30 F was married and living with husband William C. Arnold in 1850, in Abbeville County, South Carolina.
Thomas J. BUCHANAN 27 M was living with his uncle Robert Jackson ARNOLD in 1850, in Lafayette County, Mississippi.

William B. BUCHANAN Jr. born around 1820 in South Carolina. He married Mary Sims ROSS, April 15, 1841, in the 96/Abbeville District of South Carolina. The family moved to Concordia Parish, Louisiana, between 1850 and 1854. He died September 6, 1855, at his home in Concordia Parish, Louisiana. In the 1850 Census, William & family are enumerated in Greenwood, South Carolina as follows;

William B. BUCHANNON 30 M W overseer SC
Mary BUCHANNON 28 F W SC
William BUCHANNON 9 M W SC
Sarah BUCHANNON 7 F W SC
Wickeron BUCHANNON 4 F W SC
Thomas BUCHANNON 1 M W SC

Note the daughter's name "Wickeron". This name persists in some form even in the family today. This is a family name related to the ARNOLD line.

Mary was married 2nd on January 7, 1856, in Concordia Parish, Louisiana, to William M. GILBERT. On September 17, 1858, Mary sold the family land in Concordia Parish, and by 1860, the family had relocated to Marion County, Mississippi, where Mary ROSS-BUCHANAN-GILBERT's brother Nathaniel had lived for some time. The family is enumerated in the 1860 Census as follows;

Mary GILBERT 43 F W SC
W. S. BUCKHANAN 18 M W farmer SC
Sarah E. BUCKHANAN 14 F W SC
Elizabeth M. BUCKHANAN 13 F W SC
James T. BUCKHANAN 11 M W SC
Andrew BUCKHANAN 6 M W LA

Apparently, Mary's second husband has died. It is possible Mary moved her children to Marion County from Louisiana after her husband's death to get support from her brother. Notes from another ROSS researcher states Mary died November 22, 1862, in Mississippi. This information comes from a letter from a relative, but I have not seen the actual letter.
