Philip Leopold Von HELM (1721-1808) from Prussia
---Philip Leopold Von HELM II (1769-1838)
------Philip Leopold HELM III (b. 1831, Saarbrucken, Germany, d. 1909, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA)

Philip Leopold HELM III came to the USA from Germany sometime between 1837 and 1845, arriving in Mobile, Alabama, with his mother, Eleanor. Around 1849, he moved to New Orleans, Louisiana. He married his first wife, Marie, around 1856. Marie's maiden name may have been POUSSAC. She was born about 1838 in France. Their children (all born in New Orleans):

Philip Leopold HELM IV (1859-1935) married Elizabeth WARNER about 1887.
Mary HELM (c.1861-????); she may have moved to Iowa.
Henry HELM (c.1863-????)

It is believed Marie died a few years after Henry was born. Philip III married a second time, to Louisa, around 1867. She was born in New Orleans in 1851. They had one child, also born in New Orleans;

Joseph HELM (c.1870-????)

Philip Leopold HELM III's occupation was listed in the 1860 census as bookkeeper, in 1870 it was listed as a bank clerk, and in 1880 it was listed as a bank teller. Also in the 1880 census, his son Philip IV was listed as an office clerk, and his son Henry as a jeweler's apprentice. In the 1900 census Philip III was listed as a painter (at the age of 69). According to my grandfather's notes, he was one of the founders of the Mason Cosistory, was a bank officer, and a Confederate Lt. in the Civil War.
