In my quest for the parents and siblings of Grandmother Alma Coomer Wilson, after some visiting of my relatives I was able to find out that my great grandfather Coomer’ name was “Ammon Coomer.” After a number of years of searching and getting no where with my grandmother Coomer family I had pretty much put it on hold.

While at the Adair County Public Library, looking for some documents and family records on my Wilson Family.
I ran across a folder in the Coomer Files. In this folder was a sheet of paper with a half dozen Coomer names
and no signature or source for the names. However this was a Coomer family from Stokes, Co., NC. It was JOHN COOMER, b.  1796, Stokes Co., NC. He married NANCY NLN.  She was born 1803. Children of JOHN COOMER and NANCY NLN are:
               i. VILETTA COOMER born 1823
              ii. AMON COOMER born 1825
              iii.  MARY ANN COOMER born 1830
When I return to my aunts’ house and told her about the exciting news of finding AMON she said “no that would not be Ammon for it is not spelled correct.” Yet I thought very strongly that this could be the family that I was searching for.
About one year later I returned to the Adair County KY.,  to do more research. While there I ask a cousin about our great grandparents. She volunteered to help me; we were able to find some census that shed light on the Coomer which we thought could be our relatives, but not sure at this time. Later she meets a noted Adair County Researcher, Mrs. Margie Coffey, who was a relative to this Coomer branch. Upon which Mrs. Coffey sent me information that changed my thinking altogether. She pointed out that it was MARY ANN COOMER, born 1830.
The daughter of John and Nancy Coomer not their son Amon that was my great, great grandparent. She married LEANDER COOMER.  He was born 1826.

Children of MARY ANN COOMER, and LEANDER COOMER are:
             i. ALBERT “TOLBERT” COOMER, b. 1827.
             ii. NANCY COOMER. b. 1858
            iii. AMMON COOMER. b. 1860
            iv. POLLY J. b. 1864
            v. MARY E. b. 1866

With the above information we now have great grandfather AMMON COOMER (MARY2, JOHN1) was born 1860.  He married MARY E. YARBERRY, November 09, 1905, daughter of William Aron Yarberry and Sally Sherrll.

Children of AMMON COOMER and MARY E. YARBERRY are:
             i. ALMA4 COOMER, b. June 23, 1884; d. July 08, 1937.
             ii.  MARY ALICE COOMER. m. LIDGE BRAGG

ALMA "ELMA"3 COOMER (AMMON3, MARY2, JOHN1) was born June 23, 1884 in Adair County KY, and died July 08, 1937 in Adair County KY.  She married JOSHUA BRYANT WILSON, son of GWINN WILSON and MARTHA WILSON.  He was born July 06, 1887, and died February 19, 1946 in Adair County KY.

Note: in this research it turns out to be the great, great grandmother Mary Ann Coomer that we should have been looking for instead of the great grandfather Ammon. Since she as well as Leander Jr. were Coomers’ made it no easier to research?
Another interesting incident is that MARY ELIZABETH YARBERRY married AMERICA "AMMON" COOMER May 7, 1883. He was born 1860. and FANNY YARBERRY, b. July 15, 1857, Adair County KY; d. November 09, 1905, Adair County KY. She married NATHANIEL SIKES WHEELER 1871 in Adair County KY. born 1852 in Adair County KY, and died 1924 in Adair County KY.
It turns out that my great grandmother Mary Elizabeth Yarberry Coomer and great grandmother Fanny Yarberry Wheeler wife of great grandfather N. S. “Sikes” Wheeler, were sisters.
