See the Sparks family report at the bottom of this page.

Mr. Jim Sparks born February 23, 1890, was our neighbor; he was an easygoing gentleman who was known for his ability to never get in a hurry. He always had time to talk and visit with neighbors and friends.

I would pass his house on Harrods Fork Creek  going to the neighbors farm where we share cropped. He would meet me at the gate to visit a while as I passed his home place. Mr. Sparks like visiting so well that he would sometime follow me down the road walking and talking.

One March 25, 1946, I was plowing ground on the Rosson farm past Mr. Jim Sparks farm.
On that cold march day it came a number of snow flurries, they were so hard that the team of mules would turn their backside to the wind and snow flurries, sometime turning into the plow. I would usually stand close to the mules until the snow flurries stopped, then would try to plow some more until another hard flurry came.

I understand some years later that Mr. Jim Sparks walked over to the field where I was working (about two miles) and stood in the woods so he could see if I was all right, because he had not seen me pass his house to return home.

Most of the time when Mr. Jim Sparks come in for lunch, he would take a nap after eating before returning to work for the rest of the day. He was almost never sick or complained of any sickness. On December 02, 1949, while picking corn with his son Allen he took very sick after they return to the house he died about one hour later with a heart failure.

His wife, Mrs. Birdie Sparks and there elder son Allen realizing that he was dead, ring the dinner bell until it cracked.
I remember the bell ringing, it must have been about twenty minutes or so, that the bell rang until it cracked, however I did not know why the ringing of the bell. A short while later we heard that Mr. Jim Sparks had passes away. My first cousins married their son Allen. In later years, on June 03, 1980,  Allen Sparks was killed on their farm, in a tractor accident, he was the one that rang the bell till it cracked.

Mr. Jim Sparks of Sparksville was a true friend.

Memories from my childhood.
