The following is taken from the Quarter Session Petitions at Preston in 1760

A true and perfect calendar of the prisoners committed by Jonathan Cowburne - Governor of the House of Correction of Preston, humbly presented to his Majesties Justices of the Peace at the general quarter Session of the Peace, begun at Lancaster - the 15th day of July 1760 and the several adjournments held at Preston and Ormskirk in and for the said county George Cleator - Cabinet Maker. Committed by Lawrence Spencer, Esq, Mayor of Liverpoole, charged upon Oath by Josiah BAXENDALE, cabinet maker, his master, that the said Cleator, being his servant and journeyman, did on the 31st of May last, leave and quit his work which he had undertook to perform, and hath not since returned, but had agreed with several

other journeymen cabinet makers, not to work the usual hours but to work one hour less each Day; and that the said George Cleator and a many others of the said journeyman refuse to work at the usual rates and prices, contrary to the statutes in such cases made and provided; to be kept to hard labour for one month and until he shall be discharged by due Courte of Law, by Mittimus dated 19th June 1760.
