AMERICAN INDIAN FESTIVAL

On July 10th & 11th, 1999, the Reading Public Museum hosted the 6th Annual American Indian Festival.

The museum grounds were alive with Indian songs and dances, legend telling, crafts and pony rides.

The following picutres are from some of the dances. There is no "Rain Dance." They have a dance to make their crops plentiful.

This is the Social Dance. It's the only dance the male and female are allowed to touch. The audience joined in the dance.

The Traditional Lenape Bufflo Dance was not allowed to be photographed. The dance was passed down for generations. Before the dance, the dancers and ground must be cleansed with incense. We were aloud to take pictures of that. After the killing of the bufflo, they eat the heart and meat and make clothes out of the skins. They never kill for sport.

The Hoop Dance was preformed by a Canadian Indian.

The crafts were Rock Art, Headbands, Gorget, Talking Sticks, Hide Painting, Face Painting, & Tipis.

Face painting was for children of all ages. This is Lewissa Huber.
