Second Generation

4. John LEWIS Jr.1 was born about 1660 in Westerly, Washington Co., RI. He died in Apr 1735. The surname of Ann has never been proven, although information is advanced by some that she was the daughter of John and Ruth Lanphere. John Lanphere's Will, probated May 30, 1757, names his father as George Lanphere, and his daughters Anna Lewis, Ruth Shaw, Experience Datterly, as well as Mary, Patience and Keziah Lanphere, and sons John, Daniel, Amos and Nathan. It has been pointed out, however, that there would seem to be a too great difference in age possiblity here, but nothing has been found out otherwise to identify the Lewis who maaried Anna (Lanphere) Lewis.

This John Lewis was a grand juror in Westerly, 1688. On Feb 6, 1690 he sold to his brother Daniel 100 acres, dwelling house and orcahrd with 4 1/2 acres meadow which said lands were "formerly my fathers and given to me as may appear, I being the rightful owner since my father's decease." On Nov 5, 1701, purchased of Reuben Walt, of Dartmouth, 50 acres in Westerly for 40 shillings. Was Deputy 1704, 1709 and 1710. His Will, written April 14, 1732, probated April 22, 1735, names as executors his wife Ann and son Joseph.. "To wife, a third of movables. To children, 5 pounds each, viz., to Jospeh, John, William, Mary dake, Sarah Bemis, Ann Ross, Abigail Slack, Jerusha Lewis. To negro "Will", 10 pounds and his freedom. To all children, rest of estate equity." Inventory was 413 pounds, 11 shillings., viz., 2 young oxen, 4 cows, calf, 8 swine, 20 sheep, 11 lambs, horse, mare, silver money, 4 pounds, 5 shillings, etc. Ann's will probated Feb 29, 1748, written July 25, 1748 (?), named daughter Jerusha as executrix and gave to each child 5 shillings, to grandson William Slack, 10 pounds, and to the Church of the Seventh Day Baptists, in Westerly, 7 pounds. To granddaughter Anna Slack, 5 pounds. To grandsons Christopher and Joshua Lewis, sons of Jerusha, a pair of steers equally. To daugher Jerusha, the rest of estate. Inventory, 47 pounds, 15 shillings.
