Goals

The goal is simple...

Find as many descendants of George Gillaspie as possible and to search beyond George, to earlier generations.

George had nine children. Information that I have on them, along with marked sources, can be viewed in Family History. Their lineage is limited in my collection, but maybe with your help we can fill in the gaps.

I am descended from George through his youngest son Lewis Gillaspie who migrated to Franklin Co., TN. The next four generations were born in Franklin Co., TN as well. I have visited the grave site of my Great Grandfather Richard Johnson Gillaspie in Sewanee, TN on the University grounds there. I have also visited the grave sites of my Great Great grandfather Nathan Gillaspie and Great Great grandmother Mary (Phillips) Gillaspie at the Phillips Family Cemetery, just outside of Winchester, TN. Lewis Gillaspie, my Great Great Great grandfather, was buying and selling property as early as 1810, appears on the 1812 tax rolls and the 1820 census all in Franklin Co.,TN. I am currently trying to locate his and my Great Great Great grandmother Betsy (Faris) Gillaspie's resting place. (Any information about that would be very welcome!)

Through the help of fellow researchers, I have located where George is buried. It is in the Lowesville, VA area on the property of WT Wright, a descendant of George through his daughter Dicey. The old site has been plowed over and there is no marker. Mr. Wright kindly invited me to visit him and his wife Alice in the Piney River Valley and view the grave site and the surrounding area. Through another distant cousin,Joyce Lesich of Charlottesville, VA, I have discovered one of George's homes, the Athlone Plantation. Sadly, this more than 260 year old home burned to the ground in1996.

Well, there you have it. I hope you enjoy looking through our past. Comments, suggestions, additions and corrections are welcome.
