came to Texas at an early day, located in Palo Pinto in the year of 1857,

she had lived, a consistent member of the Christian Church, and maintained

BEVERS, Maria
Graford Monogram, November 23, 1908
Marie, the little two years old girl of Mr and Mrs Quinton Bevers, died
Saturday night, November 21, at the Yarbro home, four miles south of Graford,
of congestion of the lungs. Burial took plae Sunday afternoon at the Old
Bevers Cemetary. The Cemetery established by the Grandfather of this little
child, now of Startford, Oklahoma.

removed to this section early of the present year, looking at the Yarbro
home, the girlhood home of Mrs Bevers, who was Irebe Yarbro.
The little child had been ailing only a few days with croup and
cold and was in town with her parents Friday, the day before her death,
as not one thought of it being in any immediate danger.
Death of baby children are especially sad, but when they are taken
from us so suddenly it almost tears our very heart out. When parental love
must watch the awfulness of death and the eternal snatching away of our fondest
hopes life seems but all undone.
We look beyond it all and what consolation we may get comes through
that eye of hope or imortality and the promises of the Holy Bible.

TAYLOR, William S.
Former Kentucky Governor William S. Taylor dies in Indiana
Unknown Author, 1928
Appeared in unknown Indianapolis News Paper
Kentucky Explorer, April 2002
William S. Taylor, aged 74, of 2143 North Delaware Street, the former
governor of Kentucky, a colorful figure in the political history of that
state who fled to Indiana in 1900 following the fatal shooting of his Democratic
opponent, William Goebel, died at the Methodist Hospital, Thursday (Aug 2,
1928) of heart disease.
Although he had returned to Kentucky several times after he was
pardoned by Governor Willson, of Kentucky, in 1909, the exiled Governor
had never expressed his desire to return to his native state to live, preferring
the state of his adoption, where he had lived for 28 years.
"Mr. Taylor loved Indiana. He wanted to live and die here," said
the widow. "He often commented on the great number of friends he had in Kentucky,
and they often urged him to come back, but he always said that things happened
for the best for him.
"He seldom talked about the circumstances under which he left Kentucky,
and mention of the subject always bought tears to his eyes. He felt that
he had been cruelly treated." Mrs Taylor said.
Taylor was elected governor of Kentucky on the Republican ticket
in 1899, after a bitterly-fought campaign, but the following year the Kentucky
Legislature voted his election fraudulent and declared Goebel as the legal
governor.
As a consequence, two governments were set up in the Kentucky capital,
both guarded by armed camps; Taylor headed one and Goebel the other. Followers
of both governors flocked to Frankfort, and on January 10, 1900, as Goebel
was walking to the Old State Capital building, in Frankfort, he was shot
down by a concealed rifleman. The shot came from the chief offices in another
building. Goebel died a few days after he had taken the oath of office.
Taylor held a certificate of election from the Secretary of State
and held the office through legal channels, when Goebel contested the election.
Subsequently, the legislature held that Goebel was governor.
Taylor fled to Indiana, where efforts to extradite him were denied
by Governor Winfield T. Durbin, the Indiana governor, contending that Taylor
would not receive a fair trial. In the mean time, a conspiracy to murder
trial had been returned by a grand jury against Taylor, Henry Youtsey, and
Caleb Powers.
Youtsey, then 26 years old, confessed and was sentenced to the state
penitentiary. He served until Dec 12, 1918, when he was paroled.
Powers was tried four times, but each time the case was set aside,
and he was pardoned by Governor Willson in 1908. When attempts at extradition
of Taylor were frustrated, Governor Willson pardoned Taylor the following
year.
Taylor forces, soon after his indictment, took the case to federal
court in an attempt to override the legislature's decision; but William
Howard Taft, now Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, then
a Judge of the United States Court of Appeals at Cincinnati, Ohio: upheld
the Kentucky General Assembly verdict.
J. C. M. Beckham, the lieutenant governor under Goebel, assumed
the governorship. the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the Court of Appeals, and
it was on that decision that Taylor fled to Indianapolis, Indiana.
Taylor had spent a fortune in his race for governor and subsequent
legal controversies. He came to Indianapolis with his family, practically
penniless. After he had established himself in exile, he entered the practice
of law and later, was one of the founders of Empire Life Insurance Company,
of which he was vice- president and general counsel, at the time of his
death, having recuperated his financial losses and built another fortune.
Taylor was born in Butler County, Kentucky. He studied law and entered
politics at the age of 22, when he was elected clerk of the Butler County
Circuit Court. Later, he was elected judge of the circuit court; and then,
for eight years, served as attorney general for the state of Kentucky. It
was while he was attorney general that he ran for the governorship.
He married Sarah Bell Tanner, who died in Indianapolis in 1909.
Five children (four daughters and a son) survive this union. Mrs Tyler F.
Davidson, 1006 W. 34thStreet; Mrs Anna B. Wilson, 1763 N. Meridan Street;
Mrs Letha Belle Bailey, of Columbus, Ohio; Mrs. Mabel Miller, 1309 W. 32nd
Street; and Wendell S. Taylor, San Gabriel, California.
In 1912 Taylor married Nora A. Myers, of Greenwood, Indiana. The
couple quietly went to Kentucky and were married at the old home of the bride
at Jamestown. Their presence, however, soon became noised about, and Taylor
received the congratulation of his friends. A son, Charles Lindon Taylor,
age 12, survives the second marriage.
A brother, Fern Taylor, of Morgantown, Kentucky, also survives.
Funeral arrangements have not been completed, pending word from
the son in California, although burial will be in the Crown Hill Cemetery.
