Notes for William S Meeks

William was a confederate veteran, having served in the Macedonia Silver Greys and in Co F 18th Georgia Infantry. He died abt 1867/68 in Bartow County Georgia from injuries received during the war.

Meeks, W. S.- private March 4, 1862. Captured at Sharpsburg, Md. September 17, 1862. Paroled at Fort Delaware, Del. and sent to Aiken's Landing, Va. for exchange October 2, 1862 , and exchanged there November 10, 1862. Took oath of allegiance to U. S. Govt. at Louisville, Ky. February 14,1865.

About the only thing Mom and her siblings agreed on about their Grandfather Meeks was that at 6' 11" he was the tallest soldier in the Confederate Army. I mentally discounted this until I learned that Williams brother, Thomas Britton, was 7' 1". This showed height was in the family and then my nephew, Ronnie Gregory, shot up to 6' 10", making the story more believable.
