E. L. Minyard was born in Rockport, Ark., in 1837, being a son ofJames and Polly (Meeks) Miny ard, who were born in Tennessee andIllinois, respectively, but were married in Northeast Arka nsas, andabout 1837 settled at old Rockport, the following year coming to ClarkCounty and set tling on a farm on the old military road near ClearSprings. They cleared a good farm and her e spent nearly all the restof their lives, the father dying on the farm on which the subjec t ofthis sketch now resides, in 1885, at the age of seventy-five years. Hewas married twice , his first wife, the mother of the subject dying in1865. Mr. Minyard was a very successfu l farmer, a soldier in one ofthe Indian wars and was a great hunter, many bear, deer, etc., f allinga victim to his skill. E. L. Minyard was the fifth of four sons andfive daughters, an d is the only son now living. He was compelled tolabor very assiduously in helping to clea r his father's woodland farm,and therefore his advantages of acquiring an education.
