William Isaac Meeks was the first son born to Thomas and Mary DoddMeeks. He was born on 9 No v 1829 in Independence County, Arkansas.Eleven years after moving to Clark County, William wa s married toMargaret Emeline Long,(1) the daughter of Alex Thomas Wiley and MaryMadaline Albr ight Long. In addition to farming, William Meeks wasactive in many other ways. He was a lum berman operating a good steamsaw-mill: he helped move the county seat from Greenville to itsp resent location in Arkadelphia: for serveral years he had contractsfor and operated mail rout es in southern Arkansas: and he served inthe "State Troops" for about two years during the Ci vil War.(2) U. S.Post Office records(3) indicate that William Meeks served asPostmaster of t he Clear Springs Post Office from 16 January 1858 until19 June 1858; again from 24 November 1 871 until 23 January 1878.Margaret E. Meeks served from 23 July 1878 until 13 October 1880.

William I. Meeks serves as exector of the estate of several of hisrelatives. From about 186 1 through the early 1870s, he served asexecutor for the estate of William Richardson, husban d of his sister,Ellen Jane.(4) During the 1890s, he serves as executor for the estateof hi s brother, Abner D. Meeks.(5)
