In 1988, the earliest documented ancestor of our Meeks family is BENJAMIN MEEKS, aaid to b e the son of John Meeks, Jr. and Larena of Pitt County, North Carolina. (1) Benjamin Meek s was born in Pitt County, North Carolina about 1780. He is said to have married before 180 1 in Pitt County, but his wife is not named. (1) Their first eight children were born in Pit t County, North Carolina. (2) At this trime the political situation in North Carolina was un stable and the large land owners were squeezing out the small land owners. The economy was also in a depression. Free land was available in Georgia. Benjamin and his family moved to Washington County, Georgia about 1821. (3) Two more sons were born in Washington County. (4) Benjamin died intestate about 1841.
