Mailing Lists and Message Boards
For Givens / Given Surname Research
What is a Mailing List?A mailing list is a way to forward genealogical research messages to others interested in the same surname you are researching. You send your message to the list and everyone on the list gets your message. A mailing list is not a web site; it is an email forwarding service. A mailing list is a subscription service (no cost for those listed below). Once you subscribe to the mailing list all messages posted to the list will be sent to you. A mailing list is a great way for a group of individuals who share a common interest to exchange information.
What is a Message Board?A message board is evivalent to an electronic bulletin board. It is a web site where genealogical research messages and information can be posted by anyone. Information posted to the message board is available to all who visit the associated web site. Some message boards are 'Gatewayed', which means that information posted to the message board are forwarded to an associated mailing list.
