DETROIT TOWNSHIP

Detroit Township is desirably situated, and has many fine farms, and its citizens are industrious. The soil on the upland is a yellow loam mixed with a little sand, and is very productive. The first birth in the Township was a daughter of David and Hannah Mige, who died in infancy. The first marriage was Robert Cooper to Nancy Rice in 1826, at the residence of William Meredith. The first sermon was preached by Rev. Elijah Garrison, at the house of David Mize, in 1826. He was of the "Christian" denomination. The first School House was built on 16, in 1827 by Daniel Mize, Ezekiel Clemmons, William Meredith, and others. Abraham Jones taught the first school. The first church was built about 1840 at the Blue River Graveyard. The first Supervisor was Isaac Teniff. Garrett Van Duzen was the first Justice of Peace.
