Was born in Virginia in the year 1817. His father, James Hull, was a native of the state of New York, and was born
about the year 1784. He emigrated to Virginia at an early day, and remained there until he came to Illinois, in
1829. Here he remained until the time of his death, which occurred in 1859. Elizabeth Hull, the mother of Smith,
was born in Pennsylvania in 1786; her maiden name was Kinder. At an early age she moved with her parents to Virginia,
where she remained until her marriage with Mr. Hull. She came to this state with her husband, where she died in
1864. Mr. and Mrs. Hull had born to them thirteen children, eight sons and five daughters, eleven of whom are all
living, and all good citizens. After a long life of usefulness Mr. and Mrs. Hull both died devoted Christians on
the same farm upon which they first settled in this county.
In 1829 Smith moved with his parents to Illinois and settled on section 19 in Barry township, Pike county. He remained
with his parents until 1840, when he married Miss Elizabeth McAtee. She was born in Kentucky in the year 1817,
came with her parents to Illinois in 1829, and settled on section 7 in Barry township. Immediately after his marriage
Mr. Hull moved on a farm in Barry township, where he engaged successfully in farming and stock raising until 1868,
when he purchased property in the flourishing little town of Kinderhook, moved his family there, and opened a general
grocery and provision store, which business he has continued with success to the present time. Mr. Hull has always
lived a quiet and peaceable life. At an early age he gave his heart to his God, and his hand and influence to the
church, and has since lived a devoted and consistent Christian. He has been successful in every thing in which
he has engaged. He is one of the good and benevolent men of Pike county. He has always displayed great energy,
and has done much to advance the improvements of this county. He is the father of four children, one son and three
daughters, one daughter married and one at home single. Two of his children have died.
